A 13-year-old girl who ran away from home said she's from the northeast and came to Tianjin for fun without telling anyone, but now has no money to return home.  As the police verified her story, they discovered the girl was telling lies -- her mother lives in Tianjin, and all the girl wants to do is to go to Shenyang to find her father.

Jǐngfāng: jiēshang “jiǎn” dào liúlàng nǚhái

Yesterday afternoon, at a Hexi branch police station, a short young girl in the company of two female police officers happily was playing around with the office equipment. Catching sight of strangers, the girl became guarded, and when asked, recited her story from memory, saying she had come by train to Tianjin from Shenyang without telling anyone.  She came to Tianjin to find a friend, but her friend had already gone to Shenyang, she also wants to go there, but hasn't any money, so all she can do is roam the streets.  In order to make her story believable, she said she'd spent all the money she had, passed the days in the Tianjin Book Building, and at night found a place to sleep wherever she could.

But her clothing is neat and clean, her complexion is rosy, and she wasn't carrying any of things that street people usually do.  When anyone challenged her story, she said she had come to Tianjin because her schoolmate was sick and had gone to Tianjin for treatment, so she came to Tianjin to visit her, and now hasn't any money to return to Shenyang.  Police officers say they got a report about her on the afternoon of the 14th.  In order to help the girl quickly find her family, the police had no choice but to bring her to the police station.   Two female officers were assigned to look after her, and she got to know them a little, and finally the girl told them the name of her school and her full name. The officers quickly got in touch with the school in Panshi city (Jilin) and spoke to the school and her teacher, and the teacher said that this girl first arrived at fourth grade, attended for one semester only, and didn't return; she's heard that the parents had divorced and the girl had gone away with her mother to another city to attend school.

Wang Zhiyou: Public Benefit Beggar
Yì gài Wáng Zhìyǒu."

"I only wish to beg out of compassion, to do my best to help these orphaned children." On October 12, near Nanchang's Army Day Square, there was a middle-aged man dressed in a long yellow traditional Chinese gown and a square paper hat; he was wearing this strange costume to attract the attention of passersby.  During an interview, the reporter learned that this man was the person known on the internet as "Wang Zhiyou: Public Benefit Beggar."
Wǒ zhǐ xīwàng tōngguò àixīn qítǎo, jìnkěnéng dì bāngzhù nàxiē gūkǔlíngdīng de háizi." 12 rì, zài Nánchāng shì Bā-Yì guángchǎng fùjìn, yì míng shēnzhe huáng dàguà, tóu dài fāngxíng zhǐ mào de zhōngnián nánzǐ, yǐ guàiyì de dǎbàn yínqǐ le xíngrén guānzhù.  Jìzhě cáifǎng le jiědào, zhè míng nánzǐ jiù shì zài wǎngluò shàng liúchuán de "Yì gài Wáng Zhìyǒu."

On October 12, at 2 p.m., the reporter saw Wang Zhiyou.  There was an empty steel jar in front of him, and spread out on the ground was a heart-shaped piece of cardboard that read "Compassion fills the world", he looked like a beggar. The stream of passersby seemed not to understand this strangely-dressed beggar.
Jìzhě shì zài 12 rì 14 shí xǔ kàndào Wáng Zhìyǒu de. Zài tā miànqián fàngzhe yí gè kōng tiěguàn, dìshàng pūzhe yì zhāng "àixīn mǎn shìjiè" de hóngsè xīnxíng kǎzhǐ, yí fù qítǎo de yàngzi. Xíngrén lùguò, fēnfēn duì tā zhuāngbàn guàiyì dì xíngqǐ gǎndào bùjiě.

Wang Zhiyou told the reporter he is from Heilongjiang's Jidong county, he's 41 years old, "I've been to more than 10 provinces to beg, my goal is to subsidize poor orphaned children."  When the reporter questioned his motivation, he pulled out his ID papers, along with many media reports about himself.

Wang Zhiyou said that when he was young he lost both parents, and became an orphan, but luckily two old people who themselves had no children took him in and raised him, and that is how he grew up.  Going through the experience of misfortune has caused him to take the path of public benefit begging. "I believe there are many, many orphaned children who need help, they are in great difficulty, we all should extend a helping hand."
Zhèngshì yǒu guò zhèyàng de zāoyù hé jīnglì, cái shǐ tā juédìng zǒushàng gōngyì qítǎo zhī lù, "wǒ juédé xiànzài xūyào bāngzhù de pínkùn háizi hěn duō, tāmen quèquèshíshí kùnnan, xūyào dàjiā shēnchū yuánshǒu.

Leafing through the Wang Zhiyou's materials, the reporter found that he has been begging in various places in three northeastern provinces, he also has appeared in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei, Changsha, he's been to more than ten provinces and cities.
Jìzhě fānyuè xiāngguān méitǐ guānyú Wáng Zhìyǒu de bàodào fāxiàn, tā xiān-hòu zài dōngběi sān shěng gè dì xíngqǐ, yě chūxiàn zài Běijīng, Shànghǎi, Nánjīng, Héféi, Chángshā děng dì, xíngzōng biànjí shí yú shěng shì.

The money gotten from street begging is not much, and scratching out a living this way is harmful to one's health. But through it all, Wang Zhiyou has persisted in begging, and other than having to take medicine when he is ill, he's unwilling to spend any of the money he obtains from begging.  After so many years on the streets, he says he's gotten help from a lot of kind-hearted citizens, "Not long ago in Hefei, a man who owns a business saw how downtrodden I was and gave me a cell phone, and also paid the usage fees.  In Nanchang, a person from the countryside saw what I was trying to achieve, he paid for my telephone fees, I am really grateful to them."
Dāngjiē qítǎo shōurù wēibó, fēngcānlùsù yě yǒuhài shēntǐ. Dàn jínguǎn rúcǐ, Wáng Zhìyǒu háishì jiānchí qítǎo, chúle shēngbìng yào chīyào, tā jīběnshàng bù shědé huā yì fēn qítǎo lái de qián. Zhè me duō nián zài lù shang, tā shuō zìjǐ dédào le bùshǎo hǎoxīn rén de bāngzhù, "qiánbùjiǔ zài Héféi qítǎo de shíhou, yí gè zuò shēngyi de láobǎn jiàn wǒ rúcǐ luòbó, sòngle yí bù shǒujī gěi wǒ, hái gěi wǒ jiāole huàfèi. Zài Nánchāng, yǒu gè lǎoxiāng kànguò wǒ de shìjì, jiù gěi wǒ jiāole diànhuà fèi, wǒ hěn xièxiè tāmen."

"I've just come from Changsha, a stranger saw how difficult my situation was, and gave me 100 yuan [about $16.00] for hotel expenses, but I stayed out on the streets and slept in the open.  Any money I save can be given to the children."  Wang Zhiyou told the reporter he's been begging for 15 years, and the money he's earned by begging has helped more than 20 orphans.  Then he took out a pile of receipts and a savings account passbook, and a stack of photos with himself and the children,  "Every penny goes to the children, everyone I help writes up a receipt.  I've donated more than 50,000 yuan [about $8000.00] over 15 years. Some of the children stay in touch, they always are very thankful, no matter how small my contribution."
"Wǒ gānggāng cóng Chángshā guòlái, yí gè mòshēng rénjiàn wǒ bù róngyì, gěile wǒ yì bǎi yuán, ràng wǒ zhùdiàn, dàn wǒ háishì lùsù jiētóu. Qián shěng xiàlái, kéyǐ juān gěi háizi." Wáng Zhìyǒu gàosu jìzhě, tā xíngqǐ yǐ yǒu 15 nián, kào xíngqǐ dé lái de qián juānzhù guò 20 duō gè háizi. Jǐnjiēzhe, tā náchū le yì dié shōujù hé cúnzhé, hái yǒu yí dà tà tā hé háizimen zài yìqǐ de zhàopiàn, "měi bǐ qián juānchū qu, wǒ dōu huì ràng shòu zhù duìxiàng xiě píngjù. 15 nián lái, wǒ yǐjīng juānle 5 wàn duō. Yǒuxiē háizi xiànzài hái gēn wǒ liánxì, tāmen yì zhí gǎnxiè wǒ, jínguǎn wǒ de bāngzhù hěn wēibó."

Although 15 years of begging is a hard way to go, Wang Zhiyou says he plans to keep on doing it, "As long as I'm alive, every day I can help someone, and that gives me the greatest joy."
Suīrán 15 nián de qítǎo zhī lù zǒu dé hěn jiānnán, dàn Wáng Zhìyǒu biǎoshì, huì jiānchí zǒu xiàqu, "zhǐ yào huózhe yì tiān, néng bāng yí gè rén, jiù shì wǒ zuì dà de kuàilè."

Usually, whenever he arrives in a city, Wang Zhiyou begs for one month, and in Nanchang it's no different.  He says he dresses strangely in order to attract the attention of passersby, and although he is not greeted with much understanding, he's going to persist in talking about compassion.  Around 6 p.m. on the day he spoke to the reporter, Wang Zhiyou said that on the first day he was begging in Nanchang, he received 19.2 yuan [about $3.00], and someone bought him a meal.
Tōngcháng, měi dào yí gè chéngshì, Wáng Zhìyǒu huì gōngyì xíngqǐ yí gè yuè, zhècì lái Nánchāng yě shì yíyàng. Tā shuō zìjǐ de guàiyì zhuāngbàn, jiù shì wèile xīyǐn yǎnqiú, suīrán méi dédào duōshǎo líjiě, dàn tā háishì jiānchí chuánbō àixīn. Dāng rì 18 shí xǔ, Wáng Zhìyǒu gàosu jìzhě, zài Nánchāng xíngqǐ de dì-yì tiān, tā tǎodào le 19.2 yuán qián, hái yǒu rén wéi tā mǎile yì hé fàncài.

Wang Zhiyou says he will give all the contributions to the needy children, and he emphasizes to all who donate that it's necessary to help the kids "either because of serious illnesses, or extreme family poverty." Even if he can't contribute very much, at least he can go to the hospital to visit them, and that makes him happy.
Wáng Zhìyǒu shuō, huì jiāng lùrén gěi de yì kuǎn juānxiàn gěi xūyào de háizi. Duì yú juānzhù duìxiàng, tā qiángdiào bìxū shì xūyào bāngzhù de pínkùn háizi,"yàome bìngzhòng de, yàome jiātíng jí dù pínkùn de." Suīrán juānzhù duōshǎo hái bùnéng quèdìng, dàn zhìshǎo néng qù yīyuàn kànwàng yíxià, tā yě huì juédé kuàilè.

Finally, he asked the reporter to publicize his cell phone number, to make it convenient for the children who need financial support to contact him; the number is "15970666479" ... Also, readers can contact this newspaper at: 0791-86849117, 86849684.
Zuìhòu, tā hái tèyì yāoqiú jìzhě gōngbù tā de shǒujī hàomǎ, fāngbiàn xūyào juānzhù de háizi gēn tā liánxì, diàn huà hàomǎ wéi "15970666479"; cǐwài, yě kéyǐ bōdǎ běnbào rèxiàn liánxì: 0791-86849117, 86849684.

The Lost Boys

(流浪儿 liúlàng'ér)

They were living on the streets of Tianjin, some didn't know, or didn't care to tell, their family names or where they were from ... In early January 2011, to coincide with the festive and generous mood of the New Year celebrations, Tianjin's Morning Post《每日新报》, and the Tianjin Childcare and Education Center (天津市流浪儿童保护教育中心 Tiānjīn shì liúlàng értóng bǎohù jiàoyù zhōngxīn), launched a joint campaign to reunite nine homeless boys [photo] with their families ...

Dubbed "Spring Warmth" (“暖春” 活动 “Nuǎn Chūn” huódòng), the campaign positioned the boys as missing their parents and wanting to return to their own homes, while connecting their story to the most important Chinese holiday of the year, the Spring Festival, a time when children of all ages and from all over China return home to be with their families:

"Soon the Spring Festival will be here, and these homeless boys in our city miss their parents, and want to return to their own homes ... [This newspaper] has joined with the Tianjin Childcare and Education Center in a "Spring Warmth" campaign  to help these children return home." ...

At the Childcare and Education Center, the boys were assigned teachers (not welfare caseworkers); the prominence of the word "Education" in the Center's official title strongly suggests the central concern is for the continuity of the children's education, not their economic welfare, and that the true crisis (for society and for the homeless children) lies in the lack of parental guidance, the cornerstone of early childhood education ...

The boys were given every opportunity to reconnect with family traditions, and to be exposed to suitable role models, such as teachers and successful peers ... They were interviewed by a ten-year-old child reporter from the Tianjin Children's Television Network, who brought gifts and said he felt he knew the boys because he'd seen pictures of them in the papers, and decided "he just had to do something for them" ("我就想一定要为他们做些事情"  "Wǒ jiù xiǎng yīdìng yào wèi tāmen zuò xiē shìqing”)... This being the Year of the Rabbit, the boys were encouraged by their teachers to perform street dances (跳街舞 tiào jiē wǔ), and to sing themed children's songs, such as "Little White Rabbit" (《小白兔》) ...

The "Spring Warmth" campaign was vigorous and sustained ... The headline for a follow-up story that ran more than a month later (published on January 29th) was "Clues found as children search for homes"
(”小宝找家  有线索啦“  “Xiǎo bǎo zhǎo jiā  Yǒu xiànsuǒ lā”), and the feature article carried this upbeat headline: "More than 20 families vie for the 9 darlings" (9个都是宝  20多家抢着要  9 gè dōu shì bǎo  20 duō jiā qiǎng zhe yào)...

These families said they were willing to accept the homeless children into their homes, inviting them to spend the spring festival together with their (only) child   [Note: the one-child policy in China has now been in effect for more than 30 years] ...

Biǎoshì yuànyi jiē liúlàng'ér dào zìjǐ de jiāzhōng,hé zìjǐ de dúshēng zǐnǚ yītóng guòdà nián ...

In addition to the prospect of being placed with a foster family, the children could hope that readers would help identify them or their families ... A teacher from the Center joyously told the reporter that a migrant worker named Ms. Liu had just called in with an important clue: she said recognized one of the boys, he was from her village in Hebei Province, and she gave the teacher the boy's family's name ("Chang"), and said she'd often seen him at play in the village ...

But for this Lost Boy, all did not come up roses: When the Center contacted the village in Hebei Province, the Party representative quickly pointed out that more than 5,000 people live in the area, and it was difficult to confirm whether the boy actually was from their village ...
Jiēdào xiāoxi,shì bǎojiào zhōngxīn lìkè yǔ Sūn Zhèng Zhuāng cūn qǔdé liánxì. Gāi cūn cūn zhīshū biǎoshì,cūnzi yǒu 5000 duō rén,hěn nán rènshi dao měi yī gè cūnmín,bùnéng quèdìng xiǎo bǎo shì zhèlǐ de háizi...

Of this news, the reporter remarked, somewhat matter-of-factly, "As of now the work of finding homes for these children continues to be implemented" ...
Mùqián,xiànzài xiǎo bǎo de zhǎo jiā gōngzuò zhèngzài luòshí zhōng...

One of the boys, named Tongtong (潼潼 Tóngtóng), was interviewed by the Tianjin Morning Post:

"Yesterday, Tongtong wore a yellow coat, grey padded cotton pants, and a pair of matching red shoes, and he looked neat and adorable"   ...

"Recalling how he spent past Spring Festivals on his own, Tongtong spoke with great feeling: 'Do you know how I celebrated the New Year last year?  In a huge snowfall, by the side of the road, all alone. Today I have friends, like Tang Yiping, we are the best of buddies.'"
Huíxiǎng qǐ zìjǐ dàochù liúlàng de Chūnjié,Tóngtóng yǒuxiē jīdòng:  “Nǐ zhīdao wǒ qùnián shì zěnme guònián de ma? Xià zhe dàxuě,wǒ zài lùbiānr,dāngshí jiù wǒ yī gèrén.Jīnnián yǒu dàhuǒr péi wǒ,háiyǒu Táng Yīpíng,wǒmen liǎ zuì yàohǎo le." ...

When the reporter asked him, "This year, would you like to spend the new year with a kind-hearted family?"
Tongtong at once nodded his head, and then, as if lost in thought, looked straight ahead ...

Dāng jìzhě wèn:“Jīnnián Chūnjié yuànyi qù hǎoxīn de shūshu āyí jiā guò ma?Tóngtóng mǎshàng diǎndian tóu,zhīhòu ruòyǒusuǒsī de kànzháo qiánmian.
