苏金娜与女儿可爱、可心(化名)一起玩耍。Sū Jīnna yǔ nǚ'ér Kě'ài, Kěxīn (huàmíng) yī̠qǐ wánshuǎ.

At the end of 2007, when her twin daughters were born with cerebral palsy, Su Jinna's ordinary and peaceful life was shattered.  She accepted reality, made the decision to sell her marital home, and did everything in her power to take care of the children.  Over the years, Su Jinna has never given up taking care of the children.  Today, the kids have just passed their fourth birthday and have reached the standards for healthy children, and can be said to be a miracle of medical science.  With the 2012 Spring Festival close at hand, this will be their happiest and most relaxed new year in the past five years.   

2007年年底,两个双胞胎脑瘫女儿的出生打破了苏金娜平凡而宁静的生活。她接受了现实,决定卖掉婚房,尽一切努力给孩子最好的治疗。几年来,苏金娜始终没有放弃对孩子的治疗。现在,两个孩子刚过完4岁生日,并且都已经基本达到健康孩子的水准,可以说创造了医学上的奇迹。2012年春节马上就要到了,这是他们一家5年来最轻松、最高兴的一个新年。
2007 nián niándǐ, liǎng gè shuāngbāotāi nǎo tān nǚ'ér de chūshēng dǎpòle Sū Jīnna píngfán ér níngjìng de shēnghuó. The Beijing Morning Post has followed with interest the case of Dong Lina, who was the "Blind woman who registers for Broadcasting and Anchoring Exam is refused"; yesterday afternoon, she got her wish and took an exam in a special examination room at the [Beijing] Chaoyang student recruitment center.  
本报一直关注的“盲女报考播音与主持专业遭拒”的当事人董丽娜,昨日上午终于如愿地在朝阳区招生考试中心特设考场,参加了考试。

The exam began at 8:40 a.m.; at 8:00 a.m., Dong Lina arrived at the door of the exam room.  "Although every day after work I studied until very late in the evening, I was very anxious about studying basic history and geography," said Dong Lina. At 8:15 a.m., Dong Lina, accompanied by an examination staff member, entered the exam room.  Mr. Jin, the examination staff member, said that in order to allow Dong Lina to take the exam, the Center set up a special exam room.  "On January 6, 2012, Dong Lina came here to try out the equipment, and indicated there was no problem," Mr. Jin said. 
早上8点40分开考,董丽娜8点便来到了考场门前。“虽然每天下班都复习到很晚,但考历史、地理等公共基础课,多少有些担心。”董丽娜说。8点15分,董丽娜在考场工作人员的陪同下,走进了考场。考场工作人员金先生说,为能让董丽娜参加考试,中心为其设置了特殊考场。“2012年1月6日,董丽娜来这里试用了设备,表示没什么问题。”金先生说。

Kạ̌ochǎng gōngzuò rényuán Jīn xiānsheng shuō, wèi néng ràng dǒng lì nuó cānjiā kǎoshì, zhōngxīn wèi qí shèzhìle tèshū kạ̌ochǎng. “2012 nián 1 yuè 6 rì, Dǒng Lìna lái zhèlǐ shìyòngle shèbèi, biǎoshì méi shénme wèntí,” Jīn xiānsheng shuō.

A little after 12 p.m., Dong Lina left the exam center holding a copy of "Things Test-takers Should Know." "I've been nervous for the past week, but the exam period is long, and afterwards I wasn't anxious, I answered all the questions, and  as for how correct it all is .... I'll just have to wait for the results, then I'll know,"  said Dong Lina, smiling.
中午12点多,董丽娜手持“考生须知”走出了考试中心。“从一周前我就感到紧张了,但考试时间比较长,后来就不紧张了,我都写上了,至于对不对……回去看答案才知道。”说着董丽娜露出了笑容。
Zhōngwǔ 12 diǎn duō, Dǒng Lìna shǒuchí "Kǎoshēng xūzhī" zǒuchūle kǎoshì zhōngxīn. "Cóng yī zhōu qián wǒ jiù gǎndào jǐnzhāng le, dàn kǎoshì shíjiān bǐjiào cháng, hòulái jiù bù jǐnzhāng le, wǒ dōu xiě shàng le, zhìyú duì bụ̀duì……huíqu kàn dá'àn cái zhīdao," shuōzhe Dǒng Lìna lùchūle xiàoróng.

Dong Lina said that results for basic public courses will be made known in March, and in April she will take the National Broadcasting and Anchoring Exam.  "In my opinion, the specialized course exams are a little easier, I definitely will prepare hard, and I sincerely thank everyone for their support and help."
董丽娜最后说,公共基础课的考试结果要到3月才能出来,4月份她将参加播音与主持专业课的考试。“对我来说,专业课容易些,我一定回去好好准备,真心谢谢大家对我的关心与帮助。”
Dǒng Lìna zuìhòu shuō, gōnggòng jīchǔkè de kǎoshì jiéguǒ yào dào 3 yuè cáinéng chūlai, 4 yuèfèn tā jiāng cānjiā bōyīn yǔ zhǔchí zhuānyèkè de kǎoshì. "Duì wǒ lái shuō, zhuānyèkè róngyì xiē, wǒ yị̄dìng huíqu hǎohāo zhǔnbèi, zhēnxīn xièxie dàjiā duì wǒ de guānxīn yǔ bāngzhù."

"In the Mind's Eye" Movie Theater
 心目电影院  Xīnmù diànyǐngyuàn

"Wu Lao Gui has emerged from the water, he is stuffing a blueprint into a fish that a young man has just caught."  Wang Weili is holding a microphone, and as he sits in front of a TV screen and looks at a scene from "Reconnaissance Across the Yangzi" [1954], he is describing its details.  More than 10 blind people in the "audience" sit by his side and concentrate on "seeing" this film.

“吴老贵从水里冒出来,把一张图纸塞在了那小子刚钓上来的鱼里。”王伟力拿着话筒坐在电视机旁盯着《渡江侦察记》的画面,描述着里面的细节。十几个盲人“观众”坐在他旁边,聚精会神地“看”着电影。
“Wú Lǎo Guì cóng shuǐli mào chūlai, bǎ yī zhāng túzhǐ sāi zàile nà xiǎozi gāng diào shànglai de yú lǐ.” Wáng Wěilì názhe huàtǒng zuò zài diànshìjī páng dīngzhe 《Dùjiāng Zhēnchá Jì》 de huàmiàn, miáoshùzhe lǐmiàn de xìjié. Shíjǐ ge mángrén “guānzhòng” zuò zài tā pángbiān, jùjīnghuìshén de “kàn” zhe diànyǐng.

This is taking place in a small, 20-square-meter room off a courtyard on Gulou street in Xicheng district [Beijing]; there is a flat LCD screen, a DVD player, and a few chairs ... But for the blind persons, this is "paradise" ... In 2005, Wang Weili set up a specialized movie theater for the blind, "Xinmu [In the Mind's Eye] Movie Theater."  Over the past seven years, Wang Weili has "shown" more than 300 films to blind people.
这是西城区鼓楼大街的一个四合院,20平方米的小屋里,一个液晶平板电视、一台DVD、一些座椅……却被盲人朋友们称作“天堂”。2005年,王伟力在此开设了一个专门给盲人讲电影的影院——“心目影院”。近7年的时间里,王伟力让盲人朋友们“看”到了300多部电影。
Zhè shì Xīchéngqū Gǔlóu dàjiē de yī gè sìhéyuàn, 20 píngfāngmǐ de xiǎowū lǐ, yī gè yèjīng píngbǎn diànshì, yī tái DVD, yī̠xiē zuòyǐ……què bèi mángrén péngyoumen chēngzuò “tiāntáng”. 2005 nián, Wáng Wěilì zàicǐ kāishèle yī gè zhuānmén gěi mángrén jiǎng diànyǐng de yǐngyuàn—— “Xīnmù yǐngyuàn”.  Jìn 7 nián de shíjiān lǐ, Wáng Wěilì ràng mángrén péngyou men “kàndào" le 300 duō bù diànyǐng.  

In 2005, a blind friend was a guest at Wang Weili's home, and it just so happened that Wang Weili was watching "The Terminator," the English CD-ROM version.  As he watched the film, he also described the details of the movie to his friend, and when the film was over, he was so exhausted he was out of breath, but his friend was totally enthusiastic.  Afterwards, his friend embraced him and whirled around the room, and said this was the happiest day of his life, for the first time in 36 years he'd been able to "see" a flim.  From this, the idea of a movie theater took root.
2005年,一位盲人朋友到王伟力家中做客,刚巧王伟力正在播放电影《终结者》的英文版光盘。他一边看,一边给盲人朋友介绍情节,描述画面。一部电影下来,他累得气喘吁吁,盲人朋友听得着了迷。最后盲人朋友将王伟力抱了起来在屋里转圈,说这是他一生中最幸福的一天,36年来他第一次“看”了电影,还是部大片。由此,心目影院成立了。

Tā yī̠biān kàn, yī̠biān gěi mángrén péngyou jièshào qíngjié, miáoshù huàmiàn. Yī bù diànyǐng xiàlai, tā lèi de qìchuǎnxūxū, mángrén péngyou tīng dézháo le mí. Zuìhòu mángrén péngyou jiāng Wáng Wěilì bàole qǐlai zài wū lǐ zhuànquān, shuō zhè shì tā yī̠shēng zhōng zuì xìngfú de yī tiān, 36 niánlái tā dì-yī cì “kàn” le diànyǐng, háishi bù dà piàn. Yóucǐ, Xīnmù yǐngyuàn chénglì le.  

"Lack of information prevents blind people from blending into society," Wang Weili said, films are like an inexhaustible museum of science, technology, politics, economics, culture ... they touch upon all these aspects, and can furnish blind people a huge amount of information.  By narrating movies, he hopes to be able to fill in a little of what they are missing.
“信息闭塞让盲人很难真正融入这个社会。”王伟力说,电影就像一个取之不尽的博物馆,科技、政治、经济、文化……方方面面都涉及,能为盲人提供大量的信息。通过讲电影,他希望能为盲人朋友们补上缺失的一部分。
“Xìnxī bìsè ràng mángrén hěn nán zhēnzhèng róngrù zhège shèhuì.” Wáng Wěilì shuō, diànyǐng jiù xiàng yī gè qǔzhībụ̀jìn de bówùguǎn, kējì, zhèngzhì, jīngjì, wénhuà……fāngfāng-miànmiàn dōu shèjí, néngwéi mángrén tígōng dàliàng de xìnxī. Tōngguò jiǎng diànyǐng, tā xīwàng néngwéi mángrén péngyou men bǔshang quēshī de yị̄ bùfen.
 
In order to provide the best possible service, Wang Weili must watch every film at least four or five times, and painstakingly put the narrative together.  His wife frequently will turn her back and close her eyes to "check" whether Wang Weili's explanations are good enough to allow blind persons to understand.   And Wang Weili will walk on the street with both eyes closed, leaning on his wife, and stopping to enter into and understand a blind person's thirst for knowledge in this world they cannot understand.
为了更好地为盲人提供服务,每一部电影王伟力都要观看四五遍,然后精心准备串词。他的妻子经常会背对电视闭上眼睛,“检查”王伟力的讲解是否能够让盲人们更好地理解。王伟力也时常会闭着双眼,由妻子搀扶着走上大街,一走就是几站地,去更深入地了解盲人对未知世界的渴望。
Wèile gènghǎo de wèi mángrén tígōng fúwù, měi yī bù diànyǐng wáng wěilì dōu yào guānkàn sì wǔ biàn, ránhòu jīngxīn zhǔnbèi chuàn cí. Tā de qīzi jīngcháng huì bèi duì diànshì bìshang yǎnjing, “jiǎnchá” Wáng Wěilì de jiạ̌ngjiě shì-fǒu nénggòu ràng máng rénmen gènghǎo de lị̌jiě. Wáng Wěilì yě shícháng huì bìzhe shuāngyǎn, yóu qīzi chānfúzhe zǒushàng dàjiē, yī zǒu jiùshì jǐ zhàn de, qù gēngshēn rùdì liạ̌ojiě mángrén duì wèizhī shìjiè de kěwàng.
 
A few of the blind persons, because they are busy at work, can't often come, so Wang Weili came up with another idea; he has set up a very basic recording room.  Whenever he has free time, he produces recorded commentary on the computer and puts it on a CD-ROM along with the film, and sends that to his blind friends. "It's also possible to use broadcasting, and allow even more blind people to watch films."
有些盲人朋友因为忙于生计,无法经常光顾,而王伟力又想出了新的办法,设立了一个简易录音室。闲暇时,他就对着电脑录制解说词,配着电影录成光盘寄给盲人朋友们。“还可以通过电台播放,让更多的盲人看上电影。” 
Yǒuxiē mángrén péngyou yīnwèi mángyú shēngjì, wúfǎ jīngcháng guānggù, ér Wáng Wěilì yòu xiǎngchū le xīn de bànfǎ, shèlì le yī gè jiǎnyì lùyīnshì. Xiánxiá shí, tā jiù duìzhe diànnǎo lùzhì jiěshuōcí, pèizhe diànyǐng lù chéng guāngpán jìgěi mángrén péngyoumen. “Hái kẹ̌yǐ tōngguò diàntái bōfàng, ràng gèngduō de mángrén kànshang diànyǐng.” 

To get these facilities going, Wang Weili sold his car and exhausted his savings to the point where he had to borrow money from his parents.  He hopes that the "In the Mind's Eye" Movie Theater now is as close to perfection as possible.
为了这摊事业,王伟力卖了车,用光了存款,甚至还向父母借钱。望着现在运行已比较完善的心目电影院。
Wèile zhè tān shìyè, wáng wěilì màile chē, yòngguāngle cúnkuǎn, shènzhì hái xiàng fùmǔ jièqián. Wàngzhe xiànzài yùnxíng yǐ bǐjiào wánshàn de Xīnmù Diànyǐngyuàn.

Deaf Kids 聋哑孩子

我想让聋孩儿都学会说话  Wǒ xiǎng ràng lóng hái'ér dōu xuéhuì shuōhuà

Every day endlessly repeating speech patterns, more than one hundred repetitions, one syllable, or two to three characters, over and over.  For the past 12 years, Zhang Yi, a teacher at the School for the Blind and Deaf in Harbin, has done this very thing day in and day out, all in an effort to make it possible for deaf children to speak. 
每天不停地重复讲话,而上百次重复的,又仅仅是单调的一个音节或两三个字。过去12年,市盲聋哑学校教师章毅每天都在做这样的事情,为的就是让聋孩儿有一天开口说话。
Měitiān bùtíng de chóngfù jiǎnghuà, érshàng bǎi cì chóngfù de, yòu jínjǐn shì dāndiào de yí gè yīnjié huò liǎng sān gè zì.  Guòqù 12 nián, shì máng-lóng-yǎ xuéxiào jiàoshī Zhāng Yì měitiān dōu zài zuò zhèyàng de shìqíng, wéi de jiùshì ràng lónghái'ér yǒu yì tiān kāikǒu shuōhuà.

November 2nd, 8 a.m.  The first class for first-year deaf children is language, and Zhang Yi, as the teacher in charge, has this class.  Today the children are studying the four tones for the pinyin sound "ia"; once they've grasped the four tones for "ia" and how to write it, they will be able to read. Even though this class has only seven students, the pace of learning is extraordinarily slow.
2日,早8时。一年一班聋班的第一堂课是语文课,身为班主任的章毅教这门课。今天要学拼音“ia”,掌握“ia”的四个声调,并学写、会读。虽然班级里只有7个学生,但学习进度却超乎寻常的慢。
2 rì, zǎo 8 shí.  Yì nián yì bān lóng bān de dì-yì táng kè shì yǔwénkè, shēnwéi bānzhǔrèn de Zhāng Yì jiāo zhè mén kè. Jīntiān yào xué pīnyīn "ia," zhǎngwò "ia" de sì gè shēngdiào, bìng xué xiě, huì dú. Suīrán bānjí lǐ zhíyǒu 7 gè xuésheng, dàn xuéxí jìndù què chāohūxúncháng de màn. 

Harbin's School for the Blind and Deaf is the city's only special education school for blind and deaf children, and among this year's first year students, six of the seven are from cities outside of Harbin. Because these students are deaf and come from impoverished families, they have not received any language training before coming to the school, and their families paid little attention to conversing with them, so even the simplest of sounds for these students present huge difficulties. 
市盲聋哑学校是我市唯一一所接收盲聋哑孩子的特殊教育学校,今年一年级7个新生中有6个是外县学生。因为是聋哑孩子,加之家中经济条件较差,这些孩子上学前基本没接受过语音训练,家长也不注意与他们交流,所以,即使简单的发音对这些孩子而言也十分困难。
Shì máng-lóng-yǎ xuéxiào shì wǒ shì wéiyī yì suǒ jiēshōu máng-lóng-yǎ háizi de tèshū jiàoyù xuéxiào, jīnnián yi niánjí 7 gè xīshēng zhōng yǒu 6 gè shì wàixiàn xuésheng. Yīnwèi shì lóng-yǎ háizi, jiāzhī jiā zhōng jīngjì tiáojiàn jiào chà, zhè xiē háizi shàngxué qián jīběn méi jiēshòuguò yǔyīn xùnliàn, jiāzhǎng yě bú zhùyì yǔ tāmen jiāoliú, suóyǐ, jíshǐ jiǎndān de fāyīn duì zhèxiē háizi ér yán yě shífēn kùnnan.

After several repetitions of pronouncing "ia" for five minutes, Zhang Yi goes and stands next to a student, takes the student's hand and places it on her vocal cords, lets the student feel the vibrations in her vocal chords, and then has the student study the shape of her mouth; she does this repeatedly seven or eight times for each student.  The classroom is tidy, on the windowsill there is a lily in full bloom. For the entire class, except when she is writing on the blackboard, Zhang Yi is in the two aisles of tables and chairs, standing right next to the students.
在重复了数十遍、近5分钟“ia”的发音后,章毅开始走到学生身边,拉着孩子的手放在自己的声带上,让孩子边感受声带的震颤,边看着她的口形跟着学读,如此每人反复七八遍。教室很整洁,窗台上摆着一盆盛开的“一帆风顺”花。整堂课,除在黑板上写字外,章毅一直站在只有两行桌椅的学生身边。
Zài chóngfù le shù shí biàn, jìn 5 fēn zhōng "ia" de fāyīn hòu, Zhāng Yì kāishǐ zǒudào xuésheng shēn biān, lāzhe háizi de shǒu fàngzài zìjǐ de shēngdài shàng, ràng háizi biān gǎnshòu shēngdài de zhènzhàn, biān kànzhe tā de kǒuxíng gēnzhe xué dú, rúcǐ měirén fǎnfù qī bá biàn. Jiàoshì hěn zhěngjié, chuāngtái shàng bǎizhe yì pén shèng kāi de "yìfānfēngshùn" huā.  Zhěng táng kè, chú zài hēibǎn shàng xiězì wài, Zhāng Yì yìzhí zhàn zài zhí yǒu liǎng háng zhuō-yǐ de xuésheng shēn biān.

Her voice is very loud, she uses fingerspelling and very patiently repeats the simplest sounds, and during quizzes often interacts with the students, and for students who come up to standard, she gives a thumbs up and lots of encouragement.  Many of the students sound like babies babbling, and they make the wrong sounds or confusing sounds that seem right, but aren't. 
她的声音很大,配合着指语,不厌其烦地重复着简单的拼音,并通过提问不时与孩子们互动,每每对发音相对较准的孩子竖起大拇指给个大大的鼓励。多数孩子就像咿呀学语的幼儿,怎么也发不准这个音,或者只是含糊地发出一个似是而非的音。
Tā de shēngyīn hěn dà, pèihézhe zhǐyǔ, búyànqífán dì chóngfù zhe jiǎndān de pīnyīn, bìng tōngguò tíwèn bùshí yǔ háizimen hùdòng, měiměi duì fāyīn xiāng duì jiào zhǔn de háizi shùqǐ dàmúzhǐ gěi gè dàdà de gǔlì. Duōshù háizi jiù xiàng yīya xué yǔ de yòu'ér, zěnme yě fā bù zhǔn zhè ge yīn, huòzhě zhǐshì hánhu dì fā chū yí gè sìshì'érfēi de yīn. 

After one hundred repetitions of the "ia" sound, the class period comes to an end, and Zhang Yi says, "Don't be anxious, we have to study this sound for at least a week."  Her son this year is beginning first grade, and each class period he has to study four sounds. 
在上百遍重复“ia”的发音后,一堂课很快过去了,章毅说:“不急,这个拼音要学一个星期呢。”她的儿子今年也上小学一年级,一堂课要学4个拼音。
Zài shàng bǎi biàn chóngfù "ia" de fāyīn hòu, yì táng kè hěn kuài guòqù le, Zhāng Yì shuō: "Bù jí, zhè ge pīnyīn yào xué yí gè xīng qī ne." Tā de érzi jīnnián yě shàng xiǎoxué yì niánjí, yì táng kè yào xué 4 gè pīnyīn. 

The class takes a ten-minute break; Zhang Yi organizes the seven kids into a line and they walk out of the classroom; she takes them to the bathroom, when they return she checks each child to make sure their pants are zippered, or to see if they've gotten wet and have to be changed.  Then she very quickly takes out the morning's cold boiled water, which is now at room temperature, and pours out a full cupful for each child, and watches until they drink every last drop; then she erases the blackboard and puts her teaching materials in order.
课间休息10分钟,章毅组织7个孩子排成一行走出教室,带着他们去上厕所,回来又仔细检查每个人的裤子是否提好、是否弄湿需要重新换一条。然后又麻利地拿出早上晾好的凉开水,给每个孩子的杯里倒满,看着他们喝完,才开始擦黑板、收拾教具。
Kèjiān xiūxi 10 fēn zhōng, Zhāng Yì zǔzhī 7 gè háizi páichéng yì xíng zǒuchū jiàoshì, dàizhe tāmen qù shàng cèsuǒ, huílái yòu zǐxì jiǎnchá měi gè rén de kùzi shìfǒu tí hǎo, shìfǒu nòngshī xūyào chóngxīn huàn yì tiáo.  Ránhòu yòu máli dì náchū zǎoshang liàng hǎo de liángkāishuǐ, gěi měi gè háizi de bēi lǐ dǎomǎn, kànzhe tāmen hē wán, cái kāishǐ cā hēibǎn, shōushi jiàojù. 

8:50 a.m.:  The second class is physical strengthening, and this also is Zhang Yi's class.  She and the class begin "tongue scrubbing" -- open the mouth wide, stick out the tongue, push up the tongue, curl the tongue, move the lips, rub the face, do breathing exercises, do relaxation exercises, do the whole set eight times.  After this warm-up, Zhang Yi takes out a strip of paper, and in a game of competition the children practice blowing air, and then using gestures for "gun" they practice the sound "dadada," and in a game of tug-of-war they practice the sound "lalala" ... 
8时50分,第二堂课是康复课,仍是章毅的课。她和孩子们开始做“舌操”:张大嘴、伸舌头、顶舌头、卷舌头、活动嘴、揉脸、呼吸运动、放松运动,全套八节。“热身”过后,章毅拿出小纸条,让孩子通过游戏比赛练习吹气,并通过挥枪的手势练习“dadada”音节、通过拔河的手势练习“lalala”的发音。
8 shí 50 fēn, dì-èr táng kè shì kāngfù kè, réng shì Zhāng Yì de kè. Tā hé háizimen kāishǐ zuò "shé cāo": zhāngdà zuǐ, shēn shétou, dǐng shétou, juǎn shétou, huódòng zuǐ, róu liǎn, hūxī yùndòng, fàngsōng yùndòng, quántào bā jié. "Rèshēn" guò hòu, Zhāng Yì náchū xiǎo zhǐtiáo, ràng háizi tōngguò yóuxì bǐsài liànxí chuīqì, bìng tōngguò huī qiāng de shǒushì liànxí "dadada" yīnjié, tōngguò báhé de shǒushì liànxí "lalala" de fāyīn. 

In order to correct the shape of the students' mouths for pronunciation, Zhang Yi takes out her personal "magical charm" -- a big mirror -- and looking into the mirror, she makes expressive movements, and the children are side by side practicing.  The children begin to get very animated, the sunlight floods into the classrom and shines on their little red faces, and although the sounds they are making are not clear or standard, everyone is trying their hardest to make sounds. 
为校正孩子的发音口形,章毅拿出了自己的“法宝”———一面大镜子,照着镜子,手舞足蹈地一遍遍和孩子并排练习。孩子开始活跃起来,阳光透过窗户洒进教室,照在他们红扑扑的小脸上,虽然声音不清楚也不规范,但每个人都在努力地发出声音。
Wéi jiàozhèng háizi de fāyīn kǒuxíng, Zhāng Yì náchū le zìjǐ de "fábǎo" — — — yí miàn dà jìngzi, zhàozhe jìngzi, shǒuwǔzúdǎo dì yí biàn biàn hé háizi bìng pái liànxí.  Háizi kāishǐ huóyuè qǐlái, yángguāng tòuguò chuānghu sǎjìn jiàoshì, zhào zài tāmen hóngpūpū de xiǎo liǎn shàng, suīrán shēngyīn bù qīngchu yě bù guīfàn, dàn měi gè rén dōu zài nǔlì dì fāchū shēngyīn.

Because deaf children speak very little, their lung capacity is much less than that of the average child; they don't use breath normally, and this influences their ability to speak; therefore studying how to use one's breath is the basis of a deaf child's ability to speak:  "From the beginning of the term right up until now, twenty days have passsed, and the children now know how to do breathing exercises, I'm really happy about that."  Zhang Yi can't hide her sense of pride. A child studies how to produce the sound "dadada" and, adopting the pose of waving a gun, shows off to the parents while making the sound; the child's father is in tears and cooperates with the child by falling down.  Zhang Yi is right there, and she's crying too, and she feels all the effort has been worth it.
因为聋孩儿说话少,肺活量比普通孩子小很多,他们也不会正常用气,这直接影响说话,因此学会用气是聋孩儿说话的基础。“从开学到现在20天过去了,孩子们终于学会做呼吸运动了,我真高兴。”章毅毫不掩饰自己的自豪。一个孩子学会发“dada-da”的音,并用挥枪的姿势向父母炫耀时,孩子的爸爸哭了,并马上倒地配合孩子的手势。在场的章毅也哭了,觉得所有的付出都很值得。
Yīnwèi lóng hái'ér shuōhuà shǎo, fèihuóliàng bǐ pǔtōng háizi xiǎo hěn duō, tāmen yě búhuì zhèngcháng yòngqì, zhè zhíjiē yíngxiǎng shuōhuà, yīncǐ xuéhuì yòngqì shì lóng hái'ér shuōhuà de jīchǔ. "Cóng kāixué dào xiànzài 20 tiān guòqù le, háizimen zhōngyú xuéhuì zuò hūxī yùndòng le, wǒ zhēn gāoxìng." Zhāng Yì háobù yǎnshì zìjǐ de zìháo. Yí gè háizi xué huìfā "dadada" de yīn, bìngyòng huī qiāng de zīshì xiàng fùmǔ xuànyào shí, háizi de bàba kū le, bìng mǎshàng dǎodì pèihé háizi de shǒushì.  Zàichǎng de Zhāng Yì yě kū le, juédé suóyǒu de fùchū dōu hěn zhídé. 

11:30 a.m.: Lunch break.  Zhang Yi takes the children to the cafeteria for a meal.  Although there are only two dishes, she lifts up the children who aren't tall enough to see the food counter and let's them choose which dish they prefer.  "Some of the children are picky, I have to look after them, I eat with them." During the lunch break, she takes the opportunity when the children outside to go to the stationery store; some of the kids in math classs don't have rulers, and she chooses two of the best to give them.
11时30分,午休开始。章毅带着孩子去食堂打饭。虽然只有两个菜,她还是举着不够食堂售饭口高的孩子,让他们自己选择要吃哪个。“有的孩子挑食,我得看着他们点儿,和他们一块吃。”午休时,趁着孩子们在操场上游戏的空当儿,章毅又去了趟文具用品店,有两个住校的孩子上数学课没有格尺,她挑了两个好看的送给他们。
11 shí 30 fēn: Wǔxiū kāishǐ.  Zhāng Yì dàizhe háizi qù shítáng dǎ fàn. Suīrán zhíyǒu liǎng gè cài, tā háishì jǔzhe búgòu shítáng shòufàn kǒugāo de háizi, ràng tāmen zìjǐ xuǎnzé yào chī nǎgè.  "Yǒude háizi tiāoshí, wǒ děi kànzhe tāmen dián'ér, hé tāmen yíkuài chī." Wǔxiū shí, chènzhe háizimen zài cāochǎng shàng yóuxì de kōngdāng'ér, Zhāng Yì yòu qùle tàng wénjù yòngpǐn diàn, yǒu liǎng gè zhùxiào de háizi shàng shùxué kè méiyǒu géchǐ, tā tiāole liǎng gè hǎokàn de sònggěi tāmen.

In the afternoon there also is language class; this is a review of the morning's content.  Another round of repetitive sounds begins in what resembles a tape recording for teaching and studying; Zhang Yi,  confident in her lesson plan, says, "I estimate that by the end of the semester, the children will have studied the sounds of all 26 alphabetic letters"
下午第一堂课还是语文课,内容是复习上午的学习内容。新一轮的重复发音又开始了,面对像录音机一样的教与学,章毅胸有成竹地说,“估计到下学期,孩子们就能学会26个字母的发音了。”
Xiàwǔ dì-yì táng kè háishì yǔwénkè, nèiróng shì fùxí shàngwǔ de xuéxí nèiróng. Xīn yì lún de chóngfù fāyīn yòu kāishǐ le, miànduì xiàng lùyīnjī yíyàng de jiāo yǔ xué, Zhāng Yì xiōngyǒuchéngzhú dì shuō, "Gūjì dào xià xuéqī, háizimen jiù néng xuéhuì 26 gè zìmǔ de fāyīn le."

Zhang Yi says many of her classmates who studied special education with her already have changed careers, she also has thought about it, but ultimately she can't abandon these children, and she persists. "Although their parents no longer hope to have "dragons and phoenixes," I still want these deaf children to be able to speak, to provide for themselves in life, to stand on their own two feet, that is what I really wish for, and that is my ultimate goal."
章毅说,很多当年一起学习特教专业的同学现在都已改行了,自己也有一点心动,但最后还是因为放不下这些孩子而坚持下来。“虽然家长并不期望孩子成龙成凤,但我想让聋孩儿都学会说话,今后生活自理、自立,这是我的最大心愿和‘终极目标’。
”Zhāng Yì shuō, hěn duō dāngnián yìqǐ xuéxí tèjiāo zhuānyè de tóngxué xiànzài dōu yǐ gǎiháng le, zìjǐ yě yǒu yìdiǎn xindòng, dàn zuìhòu háishì yīnwèi fàngbúxià zhèxiē háizi ér jiānchí xiàlái. "Suīrán jiāzhǎng bìngbù qīwàng háizi chéng lóng chéng fèng, dàn wǒ xiǎng ràng lóng hái'ér dōu xuéhuì shuōhuà, jīnhòu shēnghuó zìlǐ, zìlì, zhè shì wǒde zuì dà xīnyuàn hé 'zhōngjí mùbiāo'."

In 1996, being exposed just once to carbon monoxide poisoning put Feng Zhiliang into a vegetative state ... At 41 years old, in the prime of his life, he lost touch with the world ...

He left his wife, 38-year-old Yang Liying, his 155-pound body, and a heavy responsibility at home ...

Yang Liying's home is in Chaoyang district, on the first floor of an ordinary looking building ... From the building's east side, there stretch two 15-meter long iron cables ... On nice days, she hangs large diapers very close together on them ... She's been doing this for 15 years ...

When she first started, people always were asking, "How old is your child?  Still using diapers after such a long time?"  She would laugh and say, "The child in my house will never grow up" ...

Then everyone knew, this all had to do with that carbon monoxide poisoning event in 1996, when her husband fell into a vegetative state ...

That year, Yang Liying was 38 years old, and the couple hadn't any children ...

When they found out the circumstances, her neighbors came to advise her, and some said: "Silly girl, what are you doing stubbornly clinging to this situation?"  Others suggested she take Feng Zhiliang to an old folk's home ... 
(知道情况的街坊邻居都来劝她,有人说,“傻丫头,你死守着他干吗".  还有人出主意将冯志良送到敬老院.  Zhīdào qíngkuàng de jiēfang línjū dōu lái quàn tā, yǒu rén shuō, "Shǎ yā tou, nǐ síshǒu zhe tā gàn ma." Hái yǒu rén chū zhǔyi jiāng Féng Zhìliáng sòngdào jìnglǎoyuàn)... 

"I stuck it out, I just had to help him, we are husband and wife, for one day and forever" ...
("我守着,我不可能不管他,我们是夫妻,一天是,一辈子就是."  "Wǒ shǒuzhe, wǒ bù kěnéng bùguǎn tā, wǒmen shì fūqī, yì tiān shì, yí bèizi jiù shì")...

Yang Liying didn't accept any "for her own good" advice: every day, from morning to evening, she washes her husband; in the mornings she massages him for one hour to prevent his muscles from withering away; she changes and washes two buckets of diapers; every two hours she turns his body; and so the years have gone by in a flash ... 
(杨立英不接受任何人"为她好" 的建议.  每天早晚,她要给丈夫擦拭一遍身体;早上一小时按摩,防止肌肉萎缩;一天换洗两桶尿布;每隔两小时翻一次身。就这样, 一晃十几年过去了.  Yáng Lìyīng bù jiēshòu rènhé rén "wéi tā hǎo"  de jiànyì.   Měitiān záowǎn, tā yào gěi zhàngfu cāshì yí biàn shēntǐ;zǎoshang yì xiǎoshí ànmó, fángzhǐ jīròu wěisuō; yìtiān huànxǐ liǎng tǒng niàobù;měigé liǎng xiǎoshí fān yícì shēn. One day in 2009, at the end of June, as she was in the kitchen cooking, she heard someone shouting her name ... There was no one else in the house; for a few moments, she stood there in a daze, then she dropped the spatula and ran into the other room ...
(2009年6月底的一天,杨立英正在厨房炒菜,猛听到有人喊她的名字。屋子里没有别人,她愣了几秒钟,扔下铲子就往里屋跑。2009 nián 6 yuè dǐ de yì tiān, Yáng Lìyīng zhèngzài chúfáng chǎocài, měng tīngdào yǒu rén hǎn tā de míngzi. Wūzi lǐ méiyǒu biérén, tā lèng le jǐ miǎo zhōng, rēng xià chǎnzi jiù wǎng lǐwū pǎo)...

She stared at her husband, he stared back at her; with his two legs all curled up, he looked the same ... But the corners of his mouth were moving ever so slightly, and she could hear loud sounds coming from his throat ... She didn't dare believe it, and she pressed on ... 
(杨立英仔细打量丈夫,丈夫眼睛直勾勾地,蜷着双腿,像往常一样。可是他嘴角微微动了一下,她能清楚地听到从他喉咙里传来的粗重声音。杨立英不敢相信,急忙凑上前去 Yáng Lìyīng zǐxì dǎliang zhàngfu, zhàngfu yǎnjing zhígōugōu dì, quán zhe shuāng tuǐ, xiàng wǎng cháng yíyàng. As she stood by the bed, she cried like a little girl, and with a greasy hand she wiped away the tears, and as she cried she also stopped to smile ...

Xie Jianjian believes the greatest benefit of traveling alone is that, to the best of his abilities he can do what he likes:  "I wanted to, so I went and did it. ... I don't believe being handicapped is any kind of absolute barrier" ...

Update: On October 28th, the newspapers reported that Dong Linuo finally had been granted permission to sit for the National Broadcasting and Anchoring exam, and that "special arrangements" had been made.

"Who turned off the lights?" 
谁把灯关了? Sheí bǎ dēng guān le?

Dong Lina told the reporter she hadn't been born blind: "From birth, my eyesight wasn't good, but I could see the rough outlines of things, until one evening as I was studying, I became aware that the lights in the classroom slowly were going dark, and then everything went black. I asked, 'Who turned off the lights?'" 

谁把灯关了?  Sheí bǎ dēng guān le?

"My classmates said no one had turned off the lights, and then I knew I'd gone completely blind."

Despite her condition, Dǒng Lìna (董丽娜) has persisted in her career plans. She wants to be a professional broadcaster (播音主持 bōyīn zhǔchí), and has worked hard to prepare for the "self-study exams" (自考 zìkǎo) in her chosen specialty. She even won second place in a national broadcasting competition.

But her applications 
to register for the national broadcaster exam have been refused.  When she asked why, "it was suggested she should apply for a suitable profession."  Another official said "the reason is that there is no precedent for having a blind person take the exam"

In July, she tried to register for the September exam, but again was rejected ... So she wrote a letter to the relevant authorities in Beijing "explaining she is capable of taking the exam, and asking for the reason why she is not being allowed to take the exam."  

信中说明其有能力参加考试,并询问不让自己参加考试的理由 xìn zhōng shuōmíng qí yǒu nénglì cānjiā kǎoshì, bìng xúnwèn bù ràng zìjǐ cānjiā kǎoshì de lǐyóu.

She explained to the reporter, "The broadcasting and anchoring profession exam has seven oral parts and four written. For the oral part, I can use Braille (盲文 mángwén), for the written, they can give me a computer with a text-to-sound reader, then I can answer the questions."

While investigating this story, the reporter repeatedly tried to contact the authorities in Beijing, but was given excuses ("the boss is in a meeting"), or told that this matter was not handled at the office he'd reached, and "up to now, a clear response has not been given."

But, the reporter notes, according to Chinese national law, every effort must be made to accommodate persons with disabilities who want to become trained through self-education (自学成才 zìxuéchéngcái) ... And Item 54 of the law specifically says that for all exams, including those for entrance to higher education and for professional degrees, "when there are blind persons taking the exam, they must be furnished exam materials in Braille, computer-based exams, or assisted by specialized staff"  ...

有盲人参加的,应当为盲人提供盲文试卷、电子试卷或者由专门的工作人员予以协助  yǒu mángrén cānjiā de, yīngdāng wèi mángrén tígōng mángwén shìjuàn, diànzǐ shìjuàn huòzhě yóu zhuānmén de gōngzuò rényuán yǔyǐ xiézhù.

He says he tries to live by the motto: "Through compassion disperse the darkness, through knowledge spread the light."
