In a loving mother's embroidery ... money to treat her son's illness

As she listened to the auctioneer's call for bids, Wang Xiaowei held her son's hand tightly, and her hands were sweating.  Yesterday, after the auctioneer's hammer fell, the huge embroidery that took her three years to finish, "Portrait of Ladies and the Four Arts of the Chinese Scholar," sold for 70,000 yuan [$11,000.00]

"Everything looks rosy now, my son's life has been saved!" This was Wang Xiaowei's first reaction, as she bent down and hugged little Gao Shang.

Last Tuesday, our paper reported that Wang Xiaowei, who was born in the 1980s, in order to raise money for life-saving surgery for her son who suffers from complications from congenital heart disease, spent three years creating a cross-stitch embroidery, which she hoped to auction off.

Yesterday afternoon, at an auction held at the China Siyuan Foundation for the Alleviation of Poverty, a segment was devoted to an auction "for Wang Xiaowei's Cross-stitch Embroidery."

Biddding for the work, "Portrait of Ladies and the Four Arts of the Chinese Scholar," began at 50,000 yuan. The auctioneer gave a special introduction: "In every stitch is a mother's determination to overcome difficulties to save her son's life, her heart filled with disappointment and hope," while in the audience dozens of bidders put down their numbered paddles and stood up to applaud Wang Xiaowei, who was standing next to the embroidery.

During the auction, when the auctioneer asked a price of 70,000 yuan, the auction hall fell silent, Wang Xiaowei was on stage holding her son's hand and biting her lip, little Gao Shang had his head bent slightly down, and his face reddened; at long last, a man in the audience agreed to buy it for 70,000 yuan.

Surgery in progress, doctor leaves to take a call
Shǒushù jìnxíng zhōng yīshēng chūqu jiē diànhuà

A routine surgery for a detached retina had to be done several times, and ultimately, after eight months, the patient permanently lost sight in her eye.  Hearing the doctor's "final opinion," the patient, Ms. Sun, remembered one small detail during surgery: the head surgeon got a phone call, took his cell phone and left, and didn't return for more than ten minutes.

"The surgery failed, couldn't the fact that the head surgeon took a phone call have something to do with it?"  With this suspicion in mind, Ms. Sun recently filed a lawsuit asking the hospital to be responsible for damages.
“Shǒushù de shībài, huì bụ̀ huì yǔ zhǔdāo yīshēng jiētīng diànhuà yǒuguān?” Dàizhe yíwèn, jìnrì, sūn nǚshì jiāng yīyuàn sù zhì fǎyuàn, yāoqiú yīyuàn chéngdān qīnquán péicháng zérèn.

It all began on November 11, 2008; as Ms. Sun, a resident of Nanjing, was on her way to work, she suddenly felt her vision go blurry, as if things in front of her were being covered up.  She went with her husband to the hospital for a check-up.  "Minor surgery for retinal detachment."  This was the doctor's opinion after an examination at a top ophthalmology hospital in Nanjing; it was decided that on November 12, the surgery would be done.
Shíjiān tuī zhì 2008 nián 11 yuè 8 rì, zhè tiān, zài dānwèi shàngbān de Nánjīng shìmín Sūn nǚshì tūrán gǎnjué yǎnqián móhu, sìhū yǎnqián yǒu dōngxi zhēdǎng. Because local anesthesia was used, Ms. Sun was wide awake when she was wheeled into the operating room, where the head surgeon, Dr. Li, and an assistant began the operation.  About half an hour into the procedure, Dr. Li's phone rang.  Dr. Li took out the phone, looked at it, put down the scalpel and began to walk towards the door to the operating room while answering the call.
Yīnwèi shì júbù mázuì, Sūn nǚshì bèi tuījìn shǒushùshì hòu réng yìshi qīngxǐng, zhǔdāo yīshēng Lǐ mǒu biàn hé zhùshǒu kāishǐ shīxíng shǒushù. "I could hear the sounds of a phone being answered, and I really began to worry, I thought, how could the doctor answer the phone while he was in the middle of surgery?"  Ms. Sun said that the doctor spent quite a while answering the call, "more than ten minutes."  In the meantime, in the large operating room she could hear the surgeons next to her asking, "How could he take a phone call in the middle of surgery? What if something were to happen, what could be done?"

After taking the call, Dr. Li and his assistant continued with the operation until it was finished.
Jiētīng wán diànhuà hòu, Lǐ yīshēng hé zhùshǒu jìxù zuò shǒushù, zhízhì shǒushù jiéshù.

Ms. Sun said that after the surgery, several doctors came over to examine her; it seemed they were a little flustered, and her heart "skipped a few beats."  Later, a couple of doctors examined her several more times, and said the results weren't good, and that she'd have to have the surgery done a second time.  On November 19, she had the second surgery.  On November 25, the doctor again performed a surgical procedure on her eye.  In June 2009, she again went in for surgery.  During this entire period, she did not have any vision in that eye. On July 16, 2009, Ms. Sun went to an affiliated hospital at Shanghai's Fudan University for an examination, and the Shangai doctors confirmed to Ms. Sun that further surgery would be useless, because she now was blind in that eye.
Sūn nǚshì shuō, shǒushù jiéshù hòu, biànyǒu jǐ gè yīshēng pǎo guòlai chákàn, kàn qǐlai shénqíng yọ̌udiǎn huāngzhāng, tā de xīnli dùnshí “gēdēng” le yị̄xià. Ms. Sun and her family could not accept this outcome, and they negotiated many times with the hospital, and finally the hospital admitted the doctor took a phone call during surgery, but contended that this had nothing to do with the results of the surgery, so the hospital wouldn't take responsibility.
Miànduì zhè yī jiéjú, Sūn nǚshì hé jiā rénjūn wúfǎ jiēshòu, tāmen shùcì qiánwǎng yīyuàn jiāoshè, zuìzhōng, yuàn fāng chéngrènle zhǔdāo yīshēng shǒushù qījiān jiētīng diànhuà de shìshí, dàn rènwéi zhè yī shìshí gēn shǒushù jiéguǒ wúguān, yīncǐ, bù yuànyi chéngdān zérèn.

Ms. Sun believes that the condition of her eye today is a direct result of the doctor taking a phone call and missing the optimal time for surgery, and this caused the surgery to fail. Ms. Sun and the hospital could not come to an agreement, so she is suing the hospital.
Sūn nǚshì rènwéi, tā de yǎnjing zhīsuǒyǐ chūxiàn jīntiān de jiéguǒ, shì yīshēng jiētīng diànhuà yán wùle shǒushù zuìjiā zhìliáo shíjiān, dǎozhì shǒushù shībài zàochéng. Sūn nǚshì zài yǔ yuàn fāng xiétiáo wú guǒ hòu, yī zhǐ sùzhuàng jiāng qí gào shàngle fǎyuàn.

The court commissioned the Nanjing Medical Association to evaluate whether Ms. Sun's condition is related to medical malpractice. The appraisal report stated that during Ms. Sun's operation, there were no irregularities, and that there often are medical complications that can bring about this result. "The fact that the surgeon took a phone call during the procedure in itself is not enough to cause these medical complications or bring about this result."  Based on this, the hospital claimed there was no medical malpractice involved.

The reporter wrote to the Jiangsu Health Ministry for advice, and the person who received the request said that at present most doctors follow the rules in a manual called "Hospital Work Rules," published in 1982.  "In the 1980s, there was no rule against this kind of situation."  But while searching other rules and regulations, the reporter discovered that in 2010, the Health Ministry published a book called "National Hospital Workers and Staff Members Regulations," and on page 49 of that book, "Surgery Management Work Rules," it clearly says: "No staff member can bring or use portable communications devices in the operation room."
Jìzhě bō dǎ Jiāngsū shěng wèishēng tīng tóusù zīxún diànhuà zīxún, jiēdài rényuán biǎoshì, mùqián dàduōshù yīyuàn dōu zūnshǒu de shì 《Yīyuàn gōngzuò zhìdù》, zhè bù zhìdù shì 1982 nián yóu wèishēngbù chūtái, “Shàng shìjì 80 niándài, méiyǒu duì zhège shìqing jìnxíng guīdìng, yěshì zhèngcháng de.” Jìzhě zài sōusuǒ xiāngguān fǎlǜ fǎguī shí, fāxiàn wèishēngbù céng zài 2010 nián chūbǎnle yī bù míngwéi 《Quánguó yīyuàn gōngzuò zhìdù yǔ rényuán gǎngwèi zhízé》 de shūjí, zài gāi shū dì 49 xiàng "Shǒushù guạ̌nlǐ gōngzuò zhìdù" zhōng, míngquè guīdìng: "Rènhé rényuán bùnéng jiāng yídòng tōngxùn gōngjù dàirù shǒushù jiān nèi shǐyòng."

It is reported that because of the special circumstances of the medical profession, such as cases where a doctor is needed urgently, answering a phone call could be a good thing.  In reality, the concept of surgery covers a broad range of things, including preparation, anesthesia, and other steps, so couldn't the surgeon take a call during the anasthesia procedure?
Jùxī, yīshēng yīnwèi zhíyè de tèshūxìng, wànyī yùdào wēizhòng bìngrén xūyào jǐnjí huìzhěn huòzhě qiǎngjiù, qí jíshí jiētīng shǒujī jiāngshì hěn zhòngyào de. "Actually, you can put in a regular telephone in the operating room, and specialized nurses can answer the phone and pass urgent messages to the doctor.  But surgeons are not permitted to take mobile phones into the operating room, because after all, the operating room is sterilized, and it has already been proven that telephones carry a huge amount of germs.  The doctor can let a nurse answer the mobile phone," said a doctor.
"Qíshí kẹ̌yǐ zài shǒushùshì shèzhì gùdìng diànhuà, yóu zhuānmén de hùshi fùzé jiētīng, chuándá jǐnjí xìnxī. Many people agree with this point of view.  The reporter has learned that this case is now being heard in court.

In 14 years, he wrote about 20 letters home, each containing barely 300 characters, and apart from a few words to send regards, he never spoke of his life, and none of the envelopes had a return address.  Still, his elderly parents hope for his return, and have remained at their home of 30 years out of fear that their son wouldn't be able to find his way back.

"Hello Dad and Mom.  Hope all is well at home -- are my brother, sister-in-law, baby Lei all okay? It's been a long time since I've written, I'm just writing to let you know all is well ..."  Li Shuyang, 70 years old, holds this 300-character letter home from his son, and cannot restrain his tears.

Early one morning in June 1997, 26-year-old Li Yuhai, from Hangu district, Yangjiabo town, Gaozhuang village [Tianjin], asked his mother for five or six yuan, and boarded a bus headed for the city.  No matter how much his mother begged him or his older brother and his sister-in-law urged him to stay, he went away with only the clothing on his back, and he has been gone for 14 years.  Two months after he left, he sent a letter to his family letting them know he was all right, but he didn't say where he was, and the letter did not have a return address.
1997 nián 6 yuè de yī gè zǎochen, jiā zhù Hàngū Yángjiābózhèn Gāozhuāngcūn de 26 suì xiạ̌ohuǒzi Lǐ Yùhǎi, zhǎo mǔqin yàole wǔ-liù yuán qián, zuòshàngle qù shìqū de dàbā chē. His older brother, Li Yubin, produced a few letters his younger brother sent between 2005 and this past July 3rd, and from the postmarks it is clear that they were mailed from Beichen district Qingguangzhen and Xiqing district Caozhuangzi [both in Tianjin].  "In 14 years, he has sent only about 20 letters, the letters don't mention where he is living, the contents of the letters are all about the same, he just sends his regards to the family," said Li Yubin.
Gēge Lǐ Yùbīn náchū dìdi jìhuí jiā de jǐ fēngxìn, cóng 2005 nián dào jīnnián 7 yuè 3 rì, tā dōu wǎng jiālǐ jìguo xìn, cóng jǐ fēngxìn de yóubiān hé yóuchuō shàng kẹ̌yǐ kànchū, jìxìn yóujú wèi Běichénqū Qīngguāng hé Xīqīngqū Cáozhuāngzi. “14 nián, tā zhǐ wǎng jiālǐ jìguo 20 duō fēngxìn, zài xìn lǐ yě méi gàosu tā xiànzài zhù nǎr, xìn de nèiróng dōu chàbuduō, jiùshì wènhòu jiālǐ rén,” Lǐ Yùbīn shuō.

Although the letters don't have return addresses, it is possible to tell from the postmarks the post office from which the letters were sent; according to these clues, Li Yuhai may be living in the area of Tianjin's Beichen Qingguangzheng and Xiqing Caozhuangzi districts; Li Yubin remembered that his brother had worked in a factory in Xiqing, but the factory had closed, and there wasn't any trace of him.
Suīrán xìnfēng shàng méiyǒu xiě jìchū dìzhǐ, buguò tōngguò yóuchuō hé xìnfēng yóubiān néng zhǎodào jìchū de yóujú, gēnjù zhèxiē xiànsuǒ xiǎnshì, Lǐ Yùhǎi kěnéng zài Běichénqū Qīngguāng hé Xīqīngqū Cáozhuāngzi yị̄dài. They failed the first time, but haven't given up on the idea of finding him.  Whenever a letter arrives, the family hurries to the postal area to look for him.  "Qingguang, Caozhuangzi, we've been there more than ten times, the most we went in one month was four times, but we couldn't find him," said Li Yubin.  A round trip from Yangjiabo to Qingguang and Caozhuangzi is more than 300 kilometers, over the past 14 years, his family has traveled more than 10,000 kilometers.

A row-fence of bamboo, a coarse concrete floor, a heated brick bed on floor tiles.  This old residence is an eyesore among rows of brand new village homes.  The elderly Li Shuyang told the reporter they've already built a new house, but he and his wife are unwilling to move, they've preserved everything just as it was before Li Yuhai left, and they did this so that one day when their son returns, he will be able to recognize the house and find his way home.
Yī pái zhú líba, liǎng chǐ kuān zhuān lù, cūcāo de shuǐní dìmiàn, pūzhe dìbǎngé de huǒkàng. Zhèyàng de jiù zháizi, zài yī pái pái zhǎnxīn de nóngcūn zháishè zhōng yǒuxiē bùkānrùmù. Recently, Li Yuhai's 65-year-old mother was diagnosed with lung cancer.  Although her family didn't tell her, she was aware of the state of her health.  "Five days ago, my son had his 40th birthday, I just want him to be alive, and let me see him, then I'll be satisfied."  As she said this, the tears flowed down her face.
Jìnrì, Lǐ Yùhǎi 65 suì de lǎo mǔqin bèi cháchū huànyǒu fèi'ái, suīrán jiārén yī̠zhí bù gàosu lǎorén, dàn lǎorén zìjǐ xīnli yě qīngchu zìjǐ de shēntǐ qíngkuàng. “Hái yǒu 5 tiān érzi jiùguo 40 suì shēngri le, zhǐyào tā huózhe, néng ràng wǒjiàn yị̄miàn, jiù mǎnzú le.” Shuōdào zhèlǐ, lǎorén yǐjing lèiliúmǎnmiàn.

What kind of person is Li Yuhai? Li Yubin told the reporter, his younger brother is one year younger than he is, he just turned 40 years old, he is about 1.76 meters tall [about 5'8"], the year he left he was pretty well-built.  He's a bit introverted and often just stayed at home.  After he graduated middle school, he found temporary jobs, and for two years in 1994 he worked at a spice factory in Xiqing, then his family wanted him to come home.
Líjiā de Lǐ Yùhǎi jiūjìng shì ge shénme rén? Lǐ Yùbīn gàosu jìzhě, dìdi bǐ zìjǐ xiǎo 1 suì, rújīn suànlái yǐjing 40 suì le, shēngāo 1 mǐ 76 zuǒyòu, dāngnián chūzǒu shí bǐjiào kuíwú. After he returned, someone offered him a marriage proposal, but soon after making contact, it was broken off, and from that time on he became a little irritable, he just wanted to sleep all day and wouldn't see anyone.  Because life at home was very hard, Li Yuhai once tried to learn a trade, and having set up his own business, life improved a little, but finally the business failed, and soon after that Li Yuhai ran away from home.

Hard work, but happy doing it!
Xīnkǔ bìng kuàilèzhe!

Some people say that kindergarten is a place where innocent hearts jump with joy, others think that a kindergarten teacher's job is a simple and happy one of singing, dancing, drawing, and playing games with children.  Actually, being a kindergarten teacher is hard and tedious, and few people know how many hours are in a normal day's work, says Li Shuping, a kindergarten teacher.
Yǒurén shuō yòu'éryuán shì tóngxīn quèyuè de dìfang, yẹ̌yǒu rén rènwéi yòu'ér jiàoshī jiùshì hé háizi yī̠qǐ chànggē, tiàowǔ, huà huà, zuò yóuxì, gōngzuò jiǎndān kuàilè. Shíjìshang, yòu'ér jiàoshī měitiān gōngzuò de fánzhòng, suǒsuì, shènzhì chángcháng yào gōngzuò shíjǐ ge xiǎoshí què shạ̌oyǒu rén zhī, Xīn Huá Yòu'éryuán de jiàoshī Lǐ Shūpíng zhèyàng shuō—--

At 7:30 in the morning, the reporter arrived at the appointed time at Xinhua Kindergarten; Li Shuping, the kindergarten teacher, already had been standing at the entrance for half an hour.  "Some parents work far away, and they brings their kids very early to kindergarten, so we have to start work before 7:00, to make sure that all the kids are taken safely inside the school," Li Shuping said.
Zǎoshang 7 diǎn bàn, jìzhě rúyuē láidào Xīn Huá Yòu'éryuán, cǐshí yòu'ér jiàoshī Lǐ Shūpíng yǐjing zài ménkǒu zhànle bàn ge xiǎoshí le. Lǐ Shūpíng shuō: “Yǒude jiāzhǎng shàngbān yuǎn, hěn zǎojiù bǎ háizi sòngdào yòu'éryuán le, suọ̌yǐ wǒmen měitiān 7 diǎn zhīqián jiùyào dào gǎng, bǎozhèng bǎ měi ge háizi ānquán jiējìn yuán lǐ.”

Li Shuping's class has more than thirty kids, and there are two young teachers to assist her.  Breakfast is at 8:10, and Li Shuping and the other two teachers carry breakfast into the classroom. "Children, do you remember what we have to do before eating?" "Wash our hands!" the children shout in a single voice.  Seeing that the kids have finished eating, the teachers tidy up the breakfast trays, put the chairs and tables in order, and take the kids to wash up and go to the bathroom.
Lǐ Shūpíng dài de xiǎo'èr bān mùqián yǒu 30 duō ge xiǎopéngyou, yǔ tā dābān de shì liǎng wèi niánqīng lǎoshī. 8 diǎn 10 fēn, dàole zǎocān shíjiān, Lǐ Shūpíng hé qítā liǎng wèi lǎoshī bǎ zǎofàn nádào jiàoshì. “Xiǎopéngyoumen, hái jìde chīfàn qián yào zuò shénme ma?” “Xị̌shǒu!” háizimen yìkǒutóngshēng. Kànzháo háizimen chīwán zǎofàn, lǎoshī kāishǐ shōushi cānpán, bǎi zhuō-yǐ, dài háizimen qù xị̌shǒu, shàng cèsuǒ.

At 9:00, the regular teaching curriculum begins.  "Children, today we are going to meet several new friends."  As Li Shuping speaks, she opens a picture book of fruit. "You see this red and round one, who is that?" "Right, that's an apple.  You can see that apple's friends, the orange and the pear, haven't been colored in, you draw some beautiful clothing for apple's friends, okay?"  As she is saying this, she is handing out to each child some paper and a box of crayons, and she guides them as they are coloring.
9 diǎnzhōng, jiàoxué huódòng zhèngshì kāishǐ. “Xiǎopéngyoumen, jīntiān wǒmen lái rènshi jǐ gè xīn péngyou.” Lǐ Shūpíng yī̠biān shuō yī̠biān dǎkāi yī běn shuị̌guǒ huàcè, “Nǐmen kàn, zhège hónghóng de, yuányuán de shì sheí ya?” “Duì! Shì píngguǒ. Nǐ kàn píngguǒ de hǎo péngyou júzi, yālí dōu méiyǒu túshàng yánsè, nǐmen gěi zhèxiē shuị̌guǒ péngyou huàshàng piàoliang de yīfu hǎobuhǎo!” Shuōzháo, Lǐ Shūpíng fāgěi měi ge háizi yī zhāng zhǐ hé yī hé làbǐ, dàizhe dàjiā yī̠qǐ tú yánsè.

A little later, most of the children have finished and have been taken outside by the younger teachers for exercise, but one little girl named Tong Tong isn't done.  Seeing that the other children have gone outside to play, Tong Tong begins to cry, and throws the crayons down on the floor.  "Teacher, I'm not going to draw! I'm not going to draw!"  Li Shuping picks up the crayons, gives Tong Tong a hug, and wipes away her tears: "Tong Tong, a good child doesn't throw things down on the floor, you see, the crayons will feel hurt.  Come on, you and the teacher will draw together, all right?"  Tong Tong nods her head and smiles through her tears.

Li Shuping says that to be a good kindergarten teacher takes patience; children unintentionally make mistakes, so you have to take time and explain; if you harshly criticize children, this could make them not want to listen.
Lǐ Shūpíng shuō, dāng hǎo yòu'éryuán lǎoshī zuì zhòngyào de jiùshì nàixīn, háizimen fàncuò dōu shì wúxīn de, suọ̌yǐ yị̄dìng yào mànmàn gēn tā shuō, rúguǒ yánlì de pīpíng háizi, zhǐ huì ràng tāmen chǎnshēng dǐchù qíngxù.

Twelve o'clock is nap time; one might think this is when the teachers could rest a little; but who would have thought that putting more than 30 kids to sleep would be a major production?  Right after lunch, many of the children are in a state of excitement, they are jumping up and down on the beds and making lots of noise.  Li Shuping and the other teachers are helping the kids take off their clothing, and trying to coax them to lie on the beds and take a nap.  Li Shuping told the reporter that the children who have been with the class the shortest time haven't yet gotten used to sleeping on schedule, and to get them to calm down and sleep like good children isn't easy; if one child begins to cry, this causes others to cry, and then the classroom is filled with "one wave after another."
Zhōngwǔ 12 diǎn shì wǔshuì shíjiān, yuán yǐwéi zhèhuì shì lǎoshīmen yī tiān zhōng zuì qīngxián de shíjiān, sheí zhīdao xiǎng ràng 30 duō ge háizi shuìjiào kěshì ge dà “gōngchéng”. Gānggāng chīwán wǔfàn, hěn duō háizi hái chénjìn zài xīngfèn zhōng, zàichuáng shàng fān gēntou, dǎnào. Lǐ Shūpíng hé qítā liǎng wèi lǎoshī yào bāng měi ge háizi tuō yīfu, hōng tāmen shàngchuáng shuìjiào. Lǐ Shūpíng gàosu jìzhě, xiǎobān de háizi rù yuán shíjiān duǎn, hái méi yǎngchéng ànshí shuì wǔjiào de xíguàn, xiǎng ràng tāmen ānjìng xiàlai guāiguāi shuìjiào díquè bù róngyì, yī gè háizi kūnào qǐlai, chángcháng huì dàidòng qítā háizi, jiàoshì lǐ jīngcháng shì “yī bō wèi píngyī bō yòu qǐ”.

At 12:30, the classroom finally is calm, but the teachers still can't relax.  "Some children wet the bed at home, so we have to wake them up and take them to the bathroom; some kids have bad dreams, and suddenly wake up crying, some kids talk in their sleep, so we have to go check on them; in a word, for these two and a half hours, we have to really monitor each child's condition."
12 diǎn 30 fēn, jiàoshì lǐ zhōngyú ānjìng xiàlai, cǐshí, lǎoshīmen yījiù bù qīngsōng. “Yǒude háizi zàijiā niàochuáng, wǔshuì zhōngjiān wǒmen xūyào jiàoxǐng tā yị̄cì, dài tā qù wèishēngjiān; yǒude háizi wǔshuì shí zuò èmèng, huì tūrán kū qǐlai, wǒmen yào mǎshàng qù hōng tā, shènzhì háizi shuō mènghuà wǒmen yẹ̌děi guòqu kànkan, zǒngzhī, zhè liǎng gè bàn xiǎoshí wǒmen yào shíkè guānzhù měi ge háizi de zhuàngtài.”

At 5:00 in the afternoon, the time finally has come for classes to be over.  "Okay, children, today's classes are finished, see you tomorrow." A day's lessons are done, and the reporter standing next to Li Shuping believes that finally she can take a deep breath and relax.  But Li Shuping tells the reporter, the next thing she has to do is to make sure each child is picked up by the parents, and she can't leave work until the last child has gone.  "Some parents, for special reasons, come late to pick up their kids, so we have to wait in the classroom, to ensure the safety of each child."

It was 6:10 when the last child left.  Li Shuping said that during 18 years of teaching, she has been at the school for more than ten hours just about every day, and sometimes she thinks that's really hard, but when she sees the innocent smiling faces of the children, and is able to watch them grow up, she feels really gratified!
To help others is to help oneself
Zhùrén jiùshì zhù zìjǐ

A few days ago, Zhang Zhiqiang, a senior majoring in Civil Engineering at Tianjin University's School of Architectural Engineering, was notified he has been hired by China State Construction Engineering Company, Singapore Southseas Company.  Next July, he'll leave to take up his new job in Singapore -- In the entire country, only 30 people have been awarded this position.  This outstanding student from an impoverished family once came very close to dropping out of college.  But he made an extraordinary effort, he didn't spend any of his family's money, and he successfully completed his education.

In 1989, Zhang Zhiqiang and his twin sister were born in Jixian Chutoulingzhen to an ordinary farming family; he has an elder sister, but when he was barely three days old, Zhang Zhiqiang's biological father died in an accident.  His mother remarried, and a fourth child was born into the family.  Zhang Zhiqiang's mother and stepfather worked all year round away from home doing temporary labor, so even before he was 10 years old, he often would use the time after school to collect waste products to supplement his family's income, and with his two sisters he looked after his family's small plot of land.
1989 nián, Zhāng Zhìqiáng hé shuāngbāotāi mèimei tóngshí chūshēng zài Jìxiàn Chūtóulǐngzhèn yī hù pǔtōng nóngjiā, tā shàngmian hái yǒu yī gè jiějie, dàn chūshēng jǐn sān tiān, Zhāng Zhìqiáng de shēngfù jiù yīn yìwài guòshì. The beginning of each school year was the most worrisome time for Zhang Zhiqiang's family, there were four kids going to school and the pressure was very intense because all four were doing well, and the family didn't want to give up on any of them.  When he was a sophomore in high school, Zhang Zhiqiang said to his family he would abandon the idea of going to college, he'd discontinue his studies to help sisters attend college. His mother and stepfather told Zhang Zhiqiang to put that idea out of his head, "No matter what it takes, we'll support all of you until college, if you study hard, you can change your lives."

In 2008, based on his outstanding grades, Zhang Zhiqiang was admitted to Tianjin's School of Architectural Engineering, his family then had three kids in college and one in middle-school.  In order to handle his loans, he immediately began to hold two jobs at once to pay for living expenses ... In addition to work-study, he took a second evening job and often worked until three or four in the morning, then returned to the dorm to sleep.  On weekends, he used his free time to travel away from the campus as a tutor.

Dào zhōumò jiàrì, Zhāng Zhìqiáng yě chángcháng wàichū zuò jiājiào.

The dormitory for Zhang Zhiqiang really was just a place to sleep; even though his home was not far from campus, it was only on the major holidays, such as October 1st and the winter break, that he would return home for three or four days.  While his classmates were asking their parents for money, he was living on the money he earned.  He was extremely frugal and barely spent 350 RMB [about $55.00] a month, and with the money he earned he bought a cell phone and a computer.

The pressures of daily life were huge, but he never gave up on attending school, every moment of spare time he devoted to studying, often until two in the morning, he energetically took part in discussions, and in experiments that lasted months.  Relying on perseverence, Zhang Zhiqiang twice was awarded national scholarships, and held the office of vice-president for the Youth Volunteer Association, and vice-chairman of Tianjin University's office of management for students who have work-study jobs.  This past September, he was awarded the title of "Self-improvement Star".

Just a few days ago, Zhang Zhiqiang received the "Star of Hope" award.  Although graduation is a year away, Zhang Zhiqiang decided not to accept this award, and wrote a letter of reply, in which he said: "With the help of scholarships, I'm about to complete my studies. Beginning this year, I've stopped accepting scholarships, and I hope that this award can be given to someone who is more in need of it than I am."
Jiù zài jǐ tiān qián, Zhāng Zhìqiáng shōudàole mǒu jījīnhuì bānfā gěi tā de “xīwàng zhī xīng” jiǎngxuéjīn. Jị̌nguǎn jùlí bìyè hái yǒu yī nián, dàn Zhāng Zhìqiáng háishi juédìng fàngqì zhè fèn jījīn, zài huíxìn zhōng, Zhāng Zhìqiáng zhèyàng xiě dào: “zài jījīn de bāngzhù xià, wǒ jíjiāng wánchéng dàxué xuéyè. "To help others is to help oneself." Zhang Zhiqiang always has these words on his lips. "We young people depend on society's financial assistance to get through our studies, so when we are able, of course we must repay society."  When he was at university, he joined the Youth Volunteer Association, during vacations he would do educational projects, and at the beginning of each new semester he would greet new students; Zhang Zhiqiang always was keen to share his enthusiasm. After his part-time work-study job, Zhang Zhiqiang spent most of his spare time on this. After his third year, Zhang Zhiqiang became vice-chair, and frequently helped other students by tutoring many different subjects, and held two or more jobs at once. While working, he came in contact with students from poor families, and he always would try his best to assist them in finding work, he would help many students to do as he did, to rely on their own hard work to complete their studies.
“Zhùrén jiùshì zhù zìjǐ.” Zhāng Zhìqiáng cháng bǎ zhè huà guà zài zuǐ biān, “Wǒmen xiōng-dì zǐ-mèi kào qīnqi hé shèhuì de zīzhù cái wánchéng xuéyè, děng wǒmen yǒu nénglì le, yị̄dìng yào huíbào shèhuì.” Dàxué qījiān, Zhāng Zhìqiáng cānjiāle qīngnián zhìyuàn zhě xiéhuì, jiàqī shí wàichū zhījiào, kāixué hòu wèi xīnshēng yìwù jiēzhàn, Zhāng Zhìqiáng zǒngshì rèxīn de fèngxiàn zìjǐ de rèqíng.

Bùnéng hē

"The tap water is so muddy people can't drink it, and this situation has been going on for about five years." Wang Yanze, a resident in Jixi City's Lishu District [Heilongjiang province], complained that the water quality is especially bad in spring and summer, when the water that flows is yellowish, and the only choice is to buy drinking water, or to go and fetch water from the outlying suburbs. "The running tap water is very bad, and yet everyone has to pay the monthly 2.6 RMB water fee," Wang Yanze said.  Heilongjiang's Jixi City's Lishu District is in an old mining area, and in addition to paying the water fee, the 20,000 residents also have to buy drinkable water.

Many of the residents of Lishu District believe the relevant departments are doing only a perfunctory job, and have caused the whole area's only source of water, the upper reaches of the Muling River, to be polluted. On both banks of the Muling River, there are two places where pollution is discharged, and there are a few scattered, illegal sand mining companies, and these intensify the muddiness of the Muling's waters.

According to Yang Hongyu, director of Jixi's Bureau of Environmental Protection, since early in 1999 the section of the Muling River that flows through Jixi has tested at level four, and contains permaganate and ammonia in excess of quotas.  But according to national standards, water must be purified at level three or above to be drinkable by people.
Jù Jīxī shì huánbǎojú júzhǎng Yáng Hóngyǔ jièshào, zǎo zài 1999 nián, MùlíngHé Líshù qū hé duàn jiù yǐ bèi jiǎncè wèi sì lèi shuǐ tǐ, qízhōng gāoměngsuānyán, ān dàn děng jūn chāobiāo. Ér àn guójiā guīdìng, zhị̌yǒu sān lèi shuǐ tǐ cáinéng tōngguò yángé xiāodú chéngxù gōng rén yǐnyòng.

Chi Xiaode, Heilongjiang province Director of Environmental Control believes that, seen broadly, there are many reasons why Muling water quality has worsened; apart from the commercial pollution, and the river picking up sand deposits, the pollution caused by domestic sewage and by farming products also are important factors.

Another important reason why the quality of the water is worsening for the residents of Lishu is that the water purification process is very crude.  Lishu District departments chose a simple water purification approach; cobblestone and sand act as a "first-pass filtering screen," then the water is pumped to water wells, where it is mixed with sodium chlorate and chloric acid and run through purification and sterilization generators, and that becomes the drinking water for the residents.

"In the Mind's Eye" Movie Theater

"Wu Lao Gui has emerged from the water, he is stuffing a blueprint into a fish that a young man has just caught."  Wang Weili is holding a microphone, and as he sits in front of a TV screen and looks at a scene from "Reconnaissance Across the Yangzi" [1954], he is describing its details.  More than 10 blind people in the "audience" sit by his side and concentrate on "seeing" this film.

This is taking place in a small, 20-square-meter room off a courtyard on Gulou street in Xicheng district [Beijing]; there is a flat LCD screen, a DVD player, and a few chairs ... But for the blind persons, this is "paradise" ... In 2005, Wang Weili set up a specialized movie theater for the blind, "Xinmu [In the Mind's Eye] Movie Theater."  Over the past seven years, Wang Weili has "shown" more than 300 films to blind people.
Zhè shì Xīchéngqū Gǔlóu dàjiē de yī gè sìhéyuàn, 20 píngfāngmǐ de xiǎowū lǐ, yī gè yèjīng píngbǎn diànshì, yī tái DVD, yī̠xiē zuòyǐ……què bèi mángrén péngyoumen chēngzuò “tiāntáng”. 2005 nián, Wáng Wěilì zàicǐ kāishèle yī gè zhuānmén gěi mángrén jiǎng diànyǐng de yǐngyuàn—— “Xīnmù yǐngyuàn”.  Jìn 7 nián de shíjiān lǐ, Wáng Wěilì ràng mángrén péngyou men “kàndào" le 300 duō bù diànyǐng.

In 2005, a blind friend was a guest at Wang Weili's home, and it just so happened that Wang Weili was watching "The Terminator," the English CD-ROM version.  As he watched the film, he also described the details of the movie to his friend, and when the film was over, he was so exhausted he was out of breath, but his friend was totally enthusiastic.  Afterwards, his friend embraced him and whirled around the room, and said this was the happiest day of his life, for the first time in 36 years he'd been able to "see" a flim.  From this, the idea of a movie theater took root.
2005 nián, yī wèi mángrén péngyou dào Wáng Wěilì jiāzhōng zuòkè, gāngqiǎo Wáng Wěilì zhèngzài bōfàng diànyǐng 《Zhōngjiézhě》 de Yīngwénbǎn guāngpán. Yóucǐ, Xīnmù yǐngyuàn chénglì le.

"Lack of information prevents blind people from blending into society," Wang Weili said, films are like an inexhaustible museum of science, technology, politics, economics, culture ... they touch upon all these aspects, and can furnish blind people a huge amount of information.  By narrating movies, he hopes to be able to fill in a little of what they are missing.
“Xìnxī bìsè ràng mángrén hěn nán zhēnzhèng róngrù zhège shèhuì.” Wáng Wěilì shuō, diànyǐng jiù xiàng yī gè qǔzhībụ̀jìn de bówùguǎn, kējì, zhèngzhì, jīngjì, wénhuà……fāngfāng-miànmiàn dōu shèjí, néngwéi mángrén tígōng dàliàng de xìnxī. Tōngguò jiǎng diànyǐng, tā xīwàng néngwéi mángrén péngyou men bǔshang quēshī de yị̄ bùfen.

In order to provide the best possible service, Wang Weili must watch every film at least four or five times, and painstakingly put the narrative together.  His wife frequently will turn her back and close her eyes to "check" whether Wang Weili's explanations are good enough to allow blind persons to understand.   And Wang Weili will walk on the street with both eyes closed, leaning on his wife, and stopping to enter into and understand a blind person's thirst for knowledge in this world they cannot understand.
Wèile gènghǎo de wèi mángrén tígōng fúwù, měi yī bù diànyǐng wáng wěilì dōu yào guānkàn sì wǔ biàn, ránhòu jīngxīn zhǔnbèi chuàn cí. Wáng Wěilì yě shícháng huì bìzhe shuāngyǎn, yóu qīzi chānfúzhe zǒushàng dàjiē, yī zǒu jiùshì jǐ zhàn de, qù gēngshēn rùdì liạ̌ojiě mángrén duì wèizhī shìjiè de kěwàng.

A few of the blind persons, because they are busy at work, can't often come, so Wang Weili came up with another idea; he has set up a very basic recording room.  Whenever he has free time, he produces recorded commentary on the computer and puts it on a CD-ROM along with the film, and sends that to his blind friends. "It's also possible to use broadcasting, and allow even more blind people to watch films."
Yǒuxiē mángrén péngyou yīnwèi mángyú shēngjì, wúfǎ jīngcháng guānggù, ér Wáng Wěilì yòu xiǎngchū le xīn de bànfǎ, shèlì le yī gè jiǎnyì lùyīnshì. Xiánxiá shí, tā jiù duìzhe diànnǎo lùzhì jiěshuōcí, pèizhe diànyǐng lù chéng guāngpán jìgěi mángrén péngyoumen. “Hái kẹ̌yǐ tōngguò diàntái bōfàng, ràng gèngduō de mángrén kànshang diànyǐng.”

To get these facilities going, Wang Weili sold his car and exhausted his savings to the point where he had to borrow money from his parents.  He hopes that the "In the Mind's Eye" Movie Theater now is as close to perfection as possible.

Having trouble making ends meet
Rùbùfūchū

"This winter I definitely will have to buy coal to stay warm, otherwise my son won't be able to endure it," said Wang Luqin as he watched his son boiling noodles.   Wang Luqin, 49, has a teaching position at the  Cuigezhuang Hongqi Elementary School school for temporary laborers, where he is considered by students and teachers to be an "all-around" teacher because he teaches math, music and "other interests" classes.  In 2005, Wang Luqin's son, Wang Huan, who has a liver disease, took a turn for the worse, so he quit his job and brought his son to Beijing, where he teaches and takes his son for treatment.
“Zhège dōngtiān yị̄dìng děi mǎi méi qụ̌nuǎn, bùrán háizi áobuzhù.” Wáng Lùqín wàngzhe zhèngzài zhǔ miàndī érzi shuō. 49 suì de Wáng Lùqín zài Cuīgèzhuāng Hóngqí dǎgōng zǐdì xuéxiào rènjiào, bèi shī-shēngmen yùwéi “quáncái lǎoshī”, jì jiāo shùxué yòu jiāo yīnyuè hé xìngqù bān. 2005 nián, Wáng Lùqín de érzi Wáng Huān gānbìng èhuà, tā fàngqì lǎojiā de gōngzuò, dài érzi láidào Běijīng, tā yī̠biān jiāoshū yī̠biān dài érzi zhìbìng.

The small room that father and son live in is very close to the entrance to the school where he teaches, and is about 8 square meters [86 square feet]; in the room there are two beds.  There also is an old TV and a vegetable cutting board, these are all the things the family has, it's not easy even to turn around in the room. Wang Luqin says, the room's wooden board walls allow the wind in and leak water, and costs 250 RMB/month [about $42.00] to rent, but during class breaks he can come home and look after his son, and at lunchtime he can make a meal for his son, "If we lived far away, and he suddenly got sick, I could not get back in time."

Wang Luqin set up a small stovetop outside the room for preparing meals, every day at 6 a.m., the first thing Wang Luqin does is to roll a lump of dough on the sideboard, then he goes off to class.  At noon, when classes are over, he comes home and boils noodles for his son.
Wáng Lùqín zài wūwài dāle ge xiǎozào tái zuòfàn, měitiān zǎoshang liù diǎn, Wáng Lùqín qǐchuáng dì-yī jiàn shì jiùshì huó yī tuán miàn bǎi zài àntái shàng, ránhòu qù shàngkè. Zhōngwǔ xiàkè huílai gěi érzi zhǔ miàntiáo chī.

At mid-day, around the time classes are ending, Wang Huan, the son, will begin to heat a pot of water, and wait for his father to come home.  After the noodles are done, they add a little salt, a spoonful of vinegar, a spoonful of chili oil, add a few slices of cabbage, and that's the meal.  When his father is teaching, Wang Huan can only wait all by himself, or look through the garbage, and hang out with a stray dog that comes around.
Zhōngwǔ kuài xiàkè shí, érzi Wáng Huān huì zài lúzi shàng shāo hǎo yī guō shuǐ, děngzhe bàba huílai. Every day, Wang Huan takes 9 doses of medicine, more than 30 pills all together; Wang Luqin's monthly salary is 1,550 RMB [$250.00], but the son's monthly medical fees are more than 1,000 RMB, so every step of the way is difficult.
Wáng Huān měitiān chī 9 dùn yào, gòng 30 duō piàn, Wáng Lùqín měi yuè 1550 yuán gōngzī, dàn érzi měi yuè 1000 yú yuán de yīyàofèi ràng tāmen de shēnghuó jǔbùwéijiān.

Next to the small room where he lives is a garbage dump, "That's really great, the kid can collect a little garbage as a subsidy, and he can get some exercise."  The room is piled high with garbage the kid has collected, every few days, Wang Luqin sorts through the garbage; he uses the broken bits of wood to make a fire, and he can sell wooden planks for a few pennies a pound, scrap copper or iron can bring a little higher price.
Tā jiā xiǎowū de pángbiān shì yī gè cūnmín dǎo lājī de dìfang, “Tǐnghǎo, háizi kẹ̌yǐ jiǎn yī̠xiē lājī bǔtiē shēnghuó, hái néng huódòng shēntǐ.” Wū lǐ duīzhe érzi jiǎn lái de fèipǐn, měigé jǐ tiān, Wáng Lùqín jiù bǎ fèipǐn fēnlèi, suì mùcái shāohuǒ yòng, mùbǎn néng mài shàng yī jīn yī̠jiǎo qián, pò tóng làntiě huíshōu jià gèng gāo.

Wang Luqin's wife is a public sanitation worker in Daxing [Beijing], once a month on her day off she comes to visit father and son, but it seems Wang Luqin never has any time off.  Five days a week he's in class, on weekends he's in the neighborhood collecting waste products, or doing part-time jobs. But no matter how hard the parents work, the son's illness causes the expenses to be greater than the income, "It's 300 yuan for each appointment at the hospital." Wang Luqin says he will never give up an opportunity to have his son's illness treated, he's been to all the big hospitals in Beijing.
Wáng Lùqín de qīzi zài Dàxīng dāng bǎojié yuán, měi yuè xiūxi yī tiān lái kàn yéliǎ, Wáng Lùqín zé jīhū méiyǒu xiūxi shíjiān. Yī zhōu wǔ tiān dōu shàngkè, zhōumò qù fùjìn shōu fèipǐn huò dǎ línggōng. The principal of the Hongqi school says, Wang Luqin is a rare "all-around" teacher, in addition to freshman math, he's responsible for 15 classes of music.  Electronic keyboard, erhu, bamboo flute, banhu, harmonica--he can do all of these things, and Wang Luqin's music classes are well-received by students.
Hóngqí xuéxiào xiàozhǎng shuō, Wáng Lùqín shì shạ̌oyǒu de quáncái lǎoshī, chúle jiāo chūyī shùxué, hái fùzé quán xiào 15 ge bān de yīnyuè kè. Diànzǐqín, èrhú, héngdí, bǎnhú, kǒuqín yàngyàngdōuhuì, Wáng Lùqín de yīnyuè kè fēicháng shòu xuésheng huānyíng.

Because the school's students come from poor families, they have no opportunity to study music, so Wang Luqin does his best to impart his own knowledge of music; one student studies the bamboo flute, another student who, he discovered, has a great voice, takes voice lessons with him  -- all at no charge.
Xuéxiào de háizi yīn jiātíng tiáojiàn chà, méiyǒu jīhuì xué yīnyuè děng, Wáng Lùqín jiù jǐnliàng bǎ zìjǐ de yīnyuè zhīshi jiāogěi xuésheng, yī gè xuésheng gēn tā xué héngdí, lìngyī ge xuésheng sǎngzi hǎo bèi tā fāxiàn, gēn tā xué shēngyuè, zhèxiē dōu shì miǎnfèi de.

Now that winter has set in, Wang Luqin has begun to worry about heating, it's too expensive to use electricity.  In past winters, he burned wood in a metal pail, but now his son's condition is worsening all the time, "No matter what, I have to buy coal."  Wáng Lùqín has done the calculations; a briquette of coal costs 1.2 RMB, and it takes at least five pieces a day, for 100 days, and that's 600 RMB [$95.00], "So much money to buy coal is really distressing, my son says we can make do with an electric blanket, and that pains me even more."
Rùdōng hòu, Wáng Lùqín chóu qǐ qụ̌nuǎn wèntí, yòng diàn tài guì. Yị̌wǎng de dōngtiān tā dōu shì zài tiětǒng lǐ shāo mùcái, dàn xiànzài érzi shēntǐ yuèláiyuè chà, “Wúlùnrúhé yẹ̌děi mǎi méi.” Wáng Lùqín suànle yị̄xià, yị̄kuài fēngwōméi 1 yuán 2 jiǎo, měitiān zuìshǎo 5 kuài, àn 100 tiānsuàn, zuìshǎo yě yào 600 kuài qián, “Zhème duō qián mǎi méi hěn xīnténg, érzi shuō yòng diànrùzi còuhe, wǒ gèng xīnténg.”

Yesterday, Jiang Liying finished a vehicle he made by himself.  A middle-school science and technology teacher who lives on Machang Street in Hexi district [Tianjin], he used square iron tubing and spare parts from abandoned electric bicycles to make a one-and-a-half-foot tall environmentally-safe electric car; it is 3.15 inches shorter than the one in the Guinness Book of World Records; it uses 5 kilowatt hours of electricity to go 75 to 100 miles, and can run continuously for 6.4 hours.

Lucky in the midst of misfortune
Bụ̀xìng zhīzhōng de wànxìng

In the vegetable market, the stand belonging to Zhang Zhengcai is completely deserted and covered with dust, and whenever his wife, Gui Qingmei, sees the place from a distance, she bursts into tears and is overwhelmed with grief to the point of fainting; all that is left now of this close family of three are a tearful mother and son, and this suffering has come about because of a car accident.

Nàme duō rén bāng wǒ jiā lǐ de tiān méi tā]

Zhang Zhengcai was from Cangzhou, a few years ago he was laid off, and in order to support his family he opened a vegetable stand in the market, and the money he earned was enough for his family to live on; he got to see his son admitted to university, and he and his wife felt that life was filled with hope.  No one expected that when Zhang Zhengcai left home to buy goods early in the morning on September 11, 2011, he would not return.
Zhāng Zhèngcái shì Cāngzhōu rén, qián jǐ nián xiale gǎng, wèile wéichí shēngjì tā zài càishìchǎng lǐ zuòqǐle mài cài de shēngyi, zhèng de qián gāng gòu yījiā sān kǒu de wēnbǎo, yǎnkànzhe 18 suì de érzi kǎoshangle dàxué, fūqī liǎ yě juéde shēnghuó yǒule pàntou. Sheí xiǎngdào, 2011 nián 9 yuè 11 rì qīngchén, Zhāng Zhèngcái chūmén jìnhuò, què zài yě méiyǒu huílai.

In tears, Zhang Zhengcai's elder sister said that a friend who sells vegetables with her told her that something had happened to her younger brother, and urged her to hurry to the hospital, but no matter what she asked, her friend refused to say more. "I knew it was bad, but I never expected my brother to die like this!" She recalled that on the day of the incident, it was like a bolt out of the blue, she could not believe her brother had died that way.
Zhāng Zhèngcái de jiějie kūzhe shuō, tóng zài yī gè shìchǎng mài cài de péngyou gàosu tā dìdi chūshì le, ràng tā gạ̌njǐn qù yīyuàn, dànshì zài zěnme wèn, duìfāng yě bù kěn duō shuō le. “Wǒ jiù zhīdao bù hǎo, dàn zěnme yě xiǎngbudào, dìdi jiù zhème méile!” Huíyì qǐ chūshì dàngtiān de qíngkuàng, jiějie biǎoshì jiù xiàng shì qíngtiānpīlì, tā wúfǎ xiāngxìn dìdi jiù zhèyàng líkāile rénshì.

The accident happened beneath Ya'an Bridge; the scene was chaotic, Zhang Zhengcai's minivan had already burned beyond recognition, all kinds of vegetables from inside the car were scattered on the ground, "You can just imagine what the person looked like from what the car looked like."  Gui Qingmei could hardly endure it, her eyes were red and swollen from crying, the main support for the family was gone in the blink of an eye, she and her son could hardly carry on with daily life, and tuition for the university quickly became a problem.

The vegetable market owner who rented the stand to him saw what was happening, "It was unsually lucky that in the middle of misfortune, we found out what a good person manager Zhang is, we've come across so many warmhearted people," said Gui Qingmei, her eyes again filling with tears.  When the president of the Bo Shengda company, Zhang Shengbo, learned of the situation, he returned a full year's rent to Gui Qingmei,  "I thought I should do a little something to help the whole family."  President Zhang said that Zhang Zhengcai was a good person, everyone is saddened by the loss.
